Claudio Miguel Pizarro Bosio (born 3 October 1978) is a Peruvian former professional footballer. He played as a striker, which is a player who tries to score goals. He is now a club ambassador for Bayern Munich.

Claudio Pizarro was the captain of Peru's national football team. He is the fifth highest scorer for his country. He is also the top scorer from Latin America in German football history. Pizarro is the all-time top scorer for SV Werder Bremen. He is also one of the top scorers for Bayern Munich and in the Bundesliga.

He started his professional career in 1996 with Deportivo Pesquero. In 1998, he joined Alianza Lima and was named the best player. In 1999, he moved to Werder Bremen in Germany. He was quickly recognized as a rising star. In 2001, he signed with Bayern Munich. There, he won many titles, including the Intercontinental Cup and multiple Bundesligas.

In 2007, Pizarro played for Chelsea F.C. in England. He scored in his first game. In 2009, he returned to Werder Bremen. He helped them win the 2008–09 DFB-Pokal (German Cup). He also became the top scorer in the 2009–10 UEFA Europa League. In 2012, he went back to Bayern Munich. During this time, he won the UEFA Champions League and the Club World Cup. He became the foreign player with the most titles for Bayern Munich.

Pizarro is the Peruvian footballer with the most goals and games played in Europe. He is the second highest foreign scorer in the Bundesliga. He is also the oldest player to score a goal in the Bundesliga, at over 40 years old. Fans of Bayern Munich see him as an idol. Werder Bremen fans consider him a legend.

Early Life and Start in Football

Claudio Pizarro was born in Callao, Peru. He grew up in Lima. He started playing football at a young age. He joined the Academia Deportiva Cantolao in Callao. Pizarro has family roots from Italy.

Club Career Highlights

Starting in Peru

Pizarro began his professional journey at 17. He played for Deportivo Pesquero. His first game was in 1996. He scored his first two goals a few weeks later. He finished his first season with three goals.

He then moved to Alianza Lima. He scored 25 goals in two seasons there. His team finished second in a major Peruvian tournament in 1999. He also played in the Copa Libertadores. After his success, he was sold to Werder Bremen in Germany.

First Time at Werder Bremen

Pizarro joined Werder Bremen in 1999 when he was 20. He played his first Bundesliga game on August 28. He scored his first Bundesliga goal on September 12. A week later, he scored three goals in one game. This showed he was a very promising player.

He scored 10 goals in 25 matches in his first season. He also played in the UEFA Cup. He scored two goals in his first UEFA Cup match. He helped Werder Bremen make an amazing comeback. They won a game 4-0 after losing the first leg 3-0.

He was a key player when Bayern Munich won the Bundesliga. They also won the German Cup in the 2002–03 season. He played his 100th Bundesliga match in November 2002. He continued to score many goals for the team.

Fans at Bayern called him "Bomber of the Andes". This nickname was because he scored so many goals. It also referred to his Peruvian background. His contract with Bayern ended in 2007. He decided to leave the club.

Time at Chelsea

On July 1, 2007, Pizarro joined Chelsea F.C.. He signed a four-year contract. He was the first Peruvian player for Chelsea. He wore the number 14 jersey.

He made his debut against Manchester United. He scored a goal in his first league game. This was against Birmingham City. Later, he scored another goal against Birmingham City.

Loan Back to Werder Bremen

On August 15, 2008, Pizarro went back to Werder Bremen on loan. Fans were very happy to see him return. He scored in his second game back. He even scored against his former team, Bayern Munich.

He scored two goals in a UEFA Cup match. This helped his team draw 2-2 and move on. He also scored three goals in one game against Hannover 96. Pizarro was very important for Werder Bremen. He scored 17 goals in 26 league games that season. He helped them reach the UEFA Cup Final.

Third Time at Werder Bremen

Pizarro signed a permanent deal to return to Werder Bremen in 2009. He continued to be a top scorer. In October 2010, he became the top foreign-born scorer in Bundesliga history. He left Werder Bremen again in 2012.

Back to Bayern Munich (Again!)

On May 26, 2012, Pizarro signed with Bayern Munich for a second time. He scored two goals in a German Cup game. In a Champions League match, he scored three goals very quickly. This was against Lille.

In March 2013, Pizarro scored four goals in a huge 9-2 win. This was against Hamburg. He also scored an important goal in the Champions League quarter-final. He finished the 2012–13 season with 13 goals.

In April 2014, he scored against Eintracht Braunschweig. This meant he had scored against every single team in the Bundesliga. His contract was not renewed after the 2014–15 season.

Fourth Time at Werder Bremen

On September 7, 2015, Pizarro joined Werder Bremen for the fourth time. He was given the number 14 jersey. In March 2016, he scored three goals in one game. This made him the oldest player to score a hat-trick in the Bundesliga. He was 37 years old. He finished the season with 14 league goals. His contract ended in July 2017.

Playing for 1. FC Köln

On September 29, 2017, Pizarro signed with 1. FC Köln. He played 16 games and scored one goal. His team was moved down from the Bundesliga at the end of the season.

Fifth Time at Werder Bremen

On July 29, 2018, Pizarro joined Werder Bremen for the fifth time. This was a record for him!

In February 2019, he scored a goal against Hertha BSC. This made him the oldest scorer in Bundesliga history. He was 40 years and 136 days old. This goal also meant he had scored in 21 straight calendar years in the Bundesliga. He scored his fifth goal of the season in May 2019. This raised his oldest scorer record even higher.

In July 2019, Pizarro announced that the 2019–20 season would be his last. He retired from football after that season. He scored 197 goals in 490 Bundesliga matches during his career.

International Career

Pizarro played for Peru since 1999. He scored in his first game against Ecuador. He played in many Copa América tournaments. He also played in several FIFA World Cup qualifying campaigns.

In August 2003, Pizarro scored the fastest goal ever for Peru. It was just 18 seconds into the game. This was in a match against Mexico.

At the 2004 Copa América, Pizarro got a head injury. This forced him to miss the rest of the tournament. He was the captain of Peru at the 2007 Copa América. He scored two goals in a game against Bolivia.

In June 2015, Pizarro scored the only goal in Peru's 1-0 win against Venezuela. This was in the 2015 Copa América. He played his last game for Peru in March 2016.

Team Rule Violation

In 2007, Pizarro was suspended from the national team. This was due to a team rule violation. He said he was innocent. After an investigation, his suspension was reduced. Later, a sports court overturned the fine against him. Pizarro was very happy with this decision. He felt his good name was restored.

Personal Life

Claudio Pizarro has a sister named Patricia. He also has a younger brother, Diego, who also played football.

Pizarro is married to Karla Salcedo. They have two sons and a daughter. All of his children were born in Germany. Pizarro also owns a race horse.

In September 2020, Pizarro became an ambassador for Bayern Munich.
