Clyst St Mary is a small village in East Devon, England. It's about 3 kilometers (2 miles) east of the city of Exeter. The village sits on the main roads leading to Exmouth and Sidmouth.
The name "Clyst" comes from an old Celtic word. It means 'clear stream'. Clyst St Mary is an important part of the Clyst Valley area. In 2011, about 2,326 people lived in this area.

What's in Clyst St Mary?
Clyst St Mary is home to several interesting places. You can find the Westpoint Arena and Showground here. This is a large venue for events and shows. There's also the Crealy Adventure Park, a fun theme park for families.
Exeter City F.C., a professional football team, has its training ground here. It's called the Cat and Fiddle Training Ground. The village also has a small area for businesses. This includes Langdon's Business Park and a big office complex.
The number of people living in Clyst St Mary has grown over time. In 1801, there were only 97 residents. By 2004, this number had grown to 642. Some people living on the north side of the main village street are counted in a different area called Sowton. Both Clyst St Mary and Sowton are now managed together. They are called Bishop's Clyst. This name comes from Bishop's Court, an old palace of the Bishop of Exeter.

History of the Village
Clyst St Mary was mentioned in the Domesday Book. This was a famous survey of England from 1086. It was called 'Bishop's Cliste' back then.
The village is well-known for its old bridge over the River Clyst. This bridge was built in the late 1100s. It was rebuilt in 1310. For over 700 years, it was the main route between Exeter and London. It is the oldest bridge in all of Devon!
The Battle of Clyst St Mary

Clyst St Mary was the site of an important battle in 1549. This was during the Prayer Book Rebellion. People in the West Country were unhappy with changes to the church. They were resisting the new Protestant rules.
After an earlier fight, rebels gathered at Clyst St Mary. There were about 6,000 of them. On August 5, 1549, government troops attacked. These troops were led by Sir William Francis. A fierce battle took place. Many rebels from Cornwall and Devon were killed. Hundreds more were taken prisoner. Later that day, many of these prisoners were also killed at Clyst Heath. The village was burned during the fighting. Many people, both fighters and villagers, drowned in the river.
