Coat of arms of Transnistria facts for kids
Transnistria is a region in Eastern Europe. It is controlled by a group that calls itself the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic. However, most countries around the world see Transnistria as a part of Moldova. This part of Moldova is officially known as the Administrative-Territorial Units of the Left Bank of the Dniester. The Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic uses a special symbol, a coat of arms, that looks like the one from the old Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic. On the other hand, the part recognized by Moldova uses the official coat of arms of Moldova.

The Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic's Coat of Arms
The coat of arms of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic is a changed version of the old Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic's emblem. This older emblem was replaced by the government of Moldova after the Soviet Union broke apart in 1991.
The main change in Transnistria's version is the addition of waves. These waves stand for the Dniester River, which is important to the region. Also, the words on the ribbon of the emblem were changed. The old Moldavian SSR emblem had an abbreviation for "Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic" and the slogan "Workers of the world, unite!" in both Russian and Romanian.
The Transnistrian emblem now shows the name PRIDNESTROVIAN MOLDAVIAN REPUBLIC in three languages: Romanian, Russian, and Ukrainian.
- In Russian, it says "ПРИДНЕСТРОВСКАЯ МОЛДАВСКАЯ РЕСПУБЛИКА". This sounds like Pridnestrovskaya Moldavskaya Respublika. You can see this on the left side of the emblem.
- In Moldovan Cyrillic, it says "РЕПУБЛИКА МОЛДОВЕНЯСКЭ НИСТРЯНЭ". This sounds like Republica Moldoveneascǎ Nistreanǎ. This is in the middle.
- In Ukrainian, it says "ПРИДНІСТРОВСЬКА МОЛДАВСЬКА РЕСПУБЛІКА". This sounds like Prydnistrovs'ka Moldavs'ka Respublika. This is on the right side.
Even though the emblem has a hammer and sickle, which was a symbol of communist countries, Transnistria today is not a socialist state.
Symbols for the Left Bank of the Dniester
The law that created the Administrative-Territorial Units of the Left Bank of the Dniester allows this region to choose its own symbols. However, this area has not yet picked a special emblem. Instead, for official uses, it uses the regular Coat of arms of Moldova.
