Concorde Book Award facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Concorde Book Award is a special yearly prize for children's literature. It's unique because students from secondary schools in South Gloucestershire, UK, choose the winners! Think of it like the Children's Book Award in the UK, where kids also vote for their favorite books.

How the Award Began

The Concorde Book Award started in the 2007–2008 school year. A group of librarians from schools and public libraries in South Gloucestershire created it. The very first award ceremony happened in 2008.

How Books Are Chosen

Each year, secondary school students in South Gloucestershire get to suggest recently published books. These suggestions form a "longlist." Then, a small group of librarians picks six books from this longlist. These six books become the "shortlist" for the Concorde Book Award. The shortlist is usually announced in early autumn.

Reading and Voting

Once the shortlist is announced, students can join reading groups. These groups meet at their school or local public library. They read and talk about the books on the shortlist. After discussing the books, students cast their vote for the one they think should win. The voting happens on World Book Day. In the United Kingdom, World Book Day is celebrated in March. Other countries usually celebrate it in April.
