Concorde Book Award facts for kids
The Concorde Book Award is a special prize for children's literature given out every year. What makes it unique is that secondary school students in South Gloucestershire, UK, are the ones who choose the winner! It's a bit like the Children's Book Award in the UK, where kids also vote for their favorite books.
The Concorde Book Award was started by a group of librarians from schools and public libraries in South Gloucestershire. This happened during the 2007–2008 school year, and the very first award ceremony was held in 2008.
Each year, students from secondary schools in South Gloucestershire get to suggest recently published books for a longlist. Then, a small group of librarians picks six books from this longlist to create the "shortlist." This shortlist is usually announced in the early autumn.
Once the shortlisted books are announced, students can join reading groups at their school or local library. They read and talk about the books on the list. After discussing them, they cast their vote for the book they think should win. The voting usually happens on World Book Day, which is celebrated in March in the United Kingdom. (Other countries often celebrate it in April.)
