Discovering Condell Park's Past

Condell Park was named after Ousley Condell. He was an engineer who arrived in Australia in 1829. In 1830, he was given four pieces of land, each about 50 acres. He named this area "Condell Park."

Black Charlie's Hill Story

There's a place called Black Charlie's Hill in Simmat Avenue. It was named after a local person known as 'Black Charlie'. His real name might have been Charles Luzon or Charlie Lopez. He was a man of Aboriginal background.

Black Charlie lived in a home made of corrugated iron. He grew vegetables and took them to market using a horse and cart. People said he would fire a single shot at 9 pm every night. No one knew why, but some thought he was hunting rabbits. Others believed he was warning about approaching aircraft.

The Secret Bankstown Bunker

Condell Park is home to the Bankstown Bunker. This bunker was a secret underground control room. It was built to look exactly like the wartime operations rooms in England. These rooms helped direct fighter planes against enemy attacks.

The bunker had special features for a top-secret defence base. It included a code room, plotting rooms, and two escape tunnels. There was also a radio transmitter room. In the middle of the bunker was a large room, about two stories high. This was the main control centre for all RAAF (Royal Australian Air Force) missions in the Pacific area during World War II. It had a big map of the South West Pacific theater of World War II.
