Cootharaba is located in the beautiful Sunshine Coast area. A big part of its southeastern border is formed by Lake Cootharaba. This lake is a popular spot for water activities.

How Cootharaba Got its Name
The name Cootharaba comes from an Aboriginal word for the nearby lake. It described a place where people could find wood to make special clubs.
Schools in the Past
Over the years, a few schools opened and closed in the Cootharaba area:
- Cootharaba School: This school was open for a short time, from around 1875 to 1891.
- Cooroora Provisional School: This school opened in 1898. It changed its name several times, becoming Cooroora State School, then Kareewa State School, and finally Boreen Junction State School. It closed in 1947.
- Cootharaba Lake State School: This school opened in 1909 and closed in 1943.
Changes in Local Government
Between 2008 and 2013, Cootharaba was part of a larger government area called the Sunshine Coast Region. However, in 2014, the original Shire of Noosa was brought back. This means Cootharaba returned to being part of the Noosa local government area.
