History of Corinda
Corinda got its name from the local railway station. The station was probably named after a large cattle farm owned by Sir Arthur Hunter Palmer. He named his farm "Corinda" after another one he owned near Aramac.
Early Settlement and Growth
The first European settlers arrived in Corinda in the 1860s. They started small farms in the area. One of the first families was the Francis family. In 1862, they bought a large piece of land. This land stretched from the Brisbane River to a spot now called Francis Lookout.
Francis Lookout is still there today. It has a small burial ground that opened in 1862. Ten early settlers are buried there, including Clement Francis, who died in 1863. Many old "Queenslander" style homes were built on the hills around the lookout. These homes date back to the early days of the area.
The first train line opened in 1874. A small shopping area slowly grew around the station on Oxley Road. The Corinda School of Arts, built in 1895, is one of the oldest buildings there. It is now a public library. The shopping area grew much faster after the 1920s. Many large bungalow-style homes were built closer to Oxley Creek during this time.
In the late 1800s and early 1900s, more land was sold for homes. Maps from that time show new areas being developed.
Local Government Changes
In 1879, the area was part of the Shire of Yeerongpilly. Later, in 1891, parts of Yeerongpilly became the Sherwood Division. This became the Shire of Sherwood in 1903, which included Corinda. In 1925, the Shire of Sherwood joined with other areas to form the City of Brisbane.

In 1933, a special home for children with disabilities, called Montrose Home for Crippled, opened. It later moved to a larger property in Corinda in 1937. A generous person named George Marchant helped by donating the land. The home also had its own school, Montrose Special School. The home closed in 2001, as care for children with disabilities changed to support them in their own homes. The school closed in 2006.
The Corinda RSL started in 1964. It is now known as the Sherwood Services Club. The local library became part of the Brisbane City Council library system in 1966. It was updated in 2016.
In 1974, during a big flood in Brisbane, a part of Corinda had a landslip. This affected more than 20 houses.
