History of Country Club Hills
From Ice Age to Farmland
Thousands of years ago, during the Ice Age, this area had many hills and ridges. These were formed by glaciers moving across the land.
Later, in the 1800s, the area was known as Copper's Grove. It was a farming community. Many German farmers lived here. They grew crops and used the land for other farm activities.
Becoming a Modern City
In the 1950s, Copper's Grove began to change. Farms started to disappear. More people moved in, making the area more populated. Because of this growth, Country Club Hills officially became a city in 1958.
The first city hall was a farmhouse. It was located at Cicero Avenue and 183rd Street. In 1975, the city hall moved. It is now the Police Department building on 175th Street.
Recent Growth and Improvements
The city has grown a lot since it was founded. In 2006, Country Club Hills made big improvements. They used money to build a large outdoor concert venue. This place is called an amphitheatre. They also built a new fire station. The city improved its community park. Many other important projects were completed too.

Shopping and Libraries
In 2006, Country Club Hills became home to a very large Wal-Mart Supercenter. This store is over 203,000 square feet (18,859 square meters). It was a big part of a new shopping area. This area is called the Gatling Square Mile. It is one of the largest undeveloped land areas in Cook County.
The city is also part of the Grande Prairie Public Library District. The main Grande Prairie Public Library is located in nearby Hazel Crest.

High Schools Serving the City
Since 1967, Country Club Hills has had Hillcrest High School. It is located at 175th Street and Pulaski Road. This school serves most of the city north of 183rd Street.
Some parts of the city attend other high schools. If you live west of Cicero Avenue and north of 183rd Street, you would go to Tinley Park High School. This school is also in the Bremen Community High School District 228. The southern part of the city (south of 183rd Street) attends Rich Central High School. This school is part of the Rich Township School District 227.
Elementary and Middle Schools
Most of Country Club Hills is served by Country Club Hills School District 160. This district has two elementary schools. It also has Southwood Middle School.
Another district, Prairie-Hills School District 144, serves some areas. This includes parts of the city north of 175th Street and east of Pulaski Road. This district has six elementary schools. It also has Prairie-Hills Junior High School in nearby Markham.
