History of Countryside
Long ago, the land where Countryside is now was home to the Potawatomi people. In the early 1800s, American pioneers also started to settle here. One of the first non-native families to arrive was Joseph Vial and his family in 1833.
For many years, Countryside was mostly quiet farmland. After the Great Chicago Fire in 1871, many people moved out of Chicago. They looked for new homes in places like Countryside. Land was very cheap, making it a good escape from the busy city.
Countryside stayed a quiet farming area until after World War II. Then, many suburban areas like Countryside started to grow very fast. The first neighborhood built for homes was LaGrange Terrace in 1947. More neighborhoods followed in the 1950s.
The City of Countryside officially became a city in 1960.
Around 1917, the family of the Marx Brothers (who later became famous comedians) bought a chicken farm nearby. Groucho Marx once joked that they spent too much time watching the Chicago Cubs baseball team. This made their farm not very successful.
