Covert is a town located in Seneca County, New York, United States. In 2020, about 2,135 people lived there.

The Town of Covert is in the southeast part of Seneca County. It is located northwest of Ithaca, New York. The main offices for the town government are in Interlaken. The ZIP Code for Covert is 14847, which is also for Interlaken.

History of Covert

Covert was first settled around 1797. It was part of an area called the Central New York Military Tract. This land was set aside for soldiers after the American Revolutionary War.

The town of Covert was officially created in 1817. It was separated from the Town of Ovid. For a short time, it was part of Tompkins County. However, it returned to Seneca County in 1819. In 1826, the Town of Lodi was formed from the western part of Covert.

In 1904, Interlaken became an official village. Before that, this community was known as "Farmer." The Covert Historic District is a special area in Covert. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places because of its historical importance.

Geography of Covert

Covert covers about 37.6 square miles (97.3 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, but about 6.1 square miles (16.0 square kilometers) is water.

The southern border of Covert touches Schuyler County and Tompkins County. The eastern border of the town is along Cayuga Lake. This lake is one of the famous Finger Lakes in New York. To the west of Covert is the town of Lodi. The town of Ovid is to the north.

Several main roads run through Covert. These include New York State Route 89 and New York State Route 96. These are north-south highways. New York State Route 96A connects with Route 96 in Interlaken.

  • Osgood Landing – A lakeshore community in the southeast part of the town.
  • Six Corners – A location west of the Covert hamlet.
  • Taughannock Falls State Park – A state park mostly in Tompkins County. It is by Cayuga Lake at the southern town line.
  • Taughannock Point – A piece of land that sticks out into Cayuga Lake at the southern town line.
