Lodi (/ˈld/ LOH-dye) is a town in Seneca County, New York, United States. In 2020, about 1,469 people lived there.

The Town of Lodi is in the southwest part of Seneca County. It is located northwest of Ithaca, New York. There is also a village called Lodi within the town. Both the town and the village are named after the city of Lodi in Italy.

History of Lodi

Early Settlers and Native Americans

The land where Lodi is now was once home to the Seneca tribe. In 1779, during the Sullivan Expedition, their villages were destroyed. This included a Seneca fruit orchard at Lodi Point.

The area then became part of the Central New York Military Tract. The first European settler arrived around 1789.

Dutch Farmers and Community Growth

Around 1799, a group of Dutch farmers from New Jersey settled near Brokaw Road. They formed a Dutch Reformed community. Over time, they built two churches. The McNeil Cemetery in that area is a reminder of one of these churches.

These Dutch families lived in the area for many generations. Their churches eventually joined with others to form the United Presbyterian Church of Lodi. Many people living in Lodi today are descendants of these original Dutch settlers.

Town Establishment and Name Changes

Lodi officially became a separate town in 1826. Before that, it was part of the Town of Covert.

The town's post office started in 1820. It was first called "De Mott's Corners" after the local postmaster and shopkeeper. In 1829, its name officially changed to "Lodi."

For a while, another community in New York was also called "Lodi." To tell them apart, Lodi was sometimes called "East Lodi" and the other place was "West Lodi." The other community later changed its name to Gowanda.

Lodi Point and Historic Sites

In the 1800s, Lodi Point was a popular stop for steamboats on the lake.

A building called the Queen's Castle was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. This means it is an important historic site.
