Daniel Dubois (born 6 September 1997) is a British professional boxer. He is known for his incredible punching power, which has earned him the nickname "Dynamite." He has been a world champion in the heavyweight division, holding the International Boxing Federation (IBF) title from 2024 to 2025. Out of his 22 wins, 21 have come by knockout.
Early Boxing Career
When Daniel was nine years old, his father took him to a boxing gym in South London. This was to help him focus his energy on something positive. He trained hard and had about 75 fights as an amateur boxer.
He won many titles as a young boxer, including five national junior championships. He was so good that he joined the Great Britain team, hoping to compete in the 2020 Summer Olympics. However, he decided to become a professional boxer instead and signed with promoter Frank Warren.
Professional Career
A Powerful Start
Dubois began his professional career in April 2017 with a fast knockout victory. He won his first fight in just 35 seconds. He continued to win, and in July 2019, he won the famous British heavyweight title by knocking out Nathan Gorman.
By 2020, he had won all 15 of his fights, with 14 of them by knockout. He was seen as one of the most exciting young boxers in the world.
First Major Test
Dubois vs. Joyce
On 28 November 2020, Dubois faced his toughest opponent yet, fellow British boxer Joe Joyce. The fight was very close. Joyce used his jab effectively, which caused Dubois's left eye to swell up badly.
In the tenth round, another strong jab hit Dubois's swollen eye. He took a knee because of the pain and injury. The referee counted him out, and Dubois experienced his first loss. After the fight, doctors found that he had a broken bone near his eye. The injury was serious and showed why the fight had to be stopped.
Becoming a Champion
Road to the Title
After taking time to heal, Dubois returned to the ring stronger than ever. He won his next two fights by knockout, including his first fight in the United States.
These wins earned him a chance to fight for a world title. On 11 June 2022, he faced Trevor Bryan for the WBA (Regular) heavyweight title in Miami, Florida. Dubois dominated the fight and won by knockout in the fourth round. He was now a world champion.
Defending the Belt
In December 2022, Dubois defended his title against Kevin Lerena. It was a dramatic fight. Dubois was knocked down three times in the first round but showed amazing toughness to come back. He recovered and went on to win the fight by knocking Lerena out in the third round.
Fighting for the Top Prize
Dubois vs. Usyk I
On 26 August 2023, Dubois had the biggest fight of his life. He challenged Oleksandr Usyk for the unified heavyweight titles in Poland. Usyk was the champion and considered one of the best boxers in the world.
Usyk won the fight by knockout in the ninth round. However, there was a controversial moment in the fifth round. Dubois landed a body punch that sent Usyk to the canvas. The referee ruled it a "low blow" (an illegal punch), which gave Usyk time to recover. Many people, including Dubois, believed the punch was legal and that he should have been declared the winner.
Big Wins in Riyadh
Dubois did not let the loss discourage him. He returned with two impressive wins in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. In December 2023, he defeated the much heavier Jarrell Miller.
Then, on 1 June 2024, he fought Filip Hrgović for the interim IBF heavyweight title. Dubois fought brilliantly and won after the doctor stopped the fight in the eighth round due to cuts on Hrgović's face.
IBF Heavyweight Champion
Dubois vs. Joshua
After Oleksandr Usyk gave up the IBF belt, Daniel Dubois was promoted to the full IBF heavyweight champion. His first title defense was a massive all-British fight against former champion Anthony Joshua. The fight took place on 21 September 2024, at a sold-out Wembley Stadium in London.
Many people expected Joshua to win, but Dubois delivered the performance of his career. He was aggressive from the start and knocked Joshua down at the end of the first round. He continued to control the fight and knocked Joshua down again. In the fifth round, a powerful right hand from Dubois knocked Joshua out. It was a huge upset victory that shocked the boxing world and proved Dubois was one of the best heavyweights.
Dubois vs. Usyk II
After his amazing win over Joshua, a rematch with Oleksandr Usyk was set for 19 July 2025. The fight was for the undisputed heavyweight championship, meaning all the major world titles were on the line. They fought again at Wembley Stadium.
The fight was another exciting battle, but Usyk's skill and experience proved to be too much. Usyk won the fight by knockout in the fifth round, ending Dubois's reign as IBF champion.
Personal Life
Dubois's father is from the country of Grenada. Daniel's younger sister, Caroline Dubois, is also a very successful professional boxer. As a young boxer, she won world and Olympic youth championships.
