Danijel Pranjić, born on December 2, 1981, is a Croatian football manager and a former player. He was known for being a very flexible player. He could play anywhere on the left side of the field. He also played as a central midfielder.

Pranjić had his most successful time playing for Bayern Munich in Germany. With Bayern, he won two major titles in the 2009–10 season. He also played in the UEFA Champions League finals in 2010 and 2012. Pranjić also played for teams in the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Greece, Slovenia, and Cyprus. He played for the Croatian national team starting in 2004. He represented his country in three big tournaments: Euro 2008, Euro 2012, and the 2014 World Cup.

After he stopped playing, Pranjić became a football manager. He has managed several clubs, including teams in Croatia, Bosnia, and Cyprus.

Playing for Clubs

Early Days in Croatia

Danijel Pranjić was born in Našice, Croatia. He began his football journey at his hometown club, NAŠK. He also played for Papuk and Belišće. In 2002, he joined Osijek, a top Croatian team. Two seasons later, in 2004, Pranjić moved to Dinamo Zagreb. While at Dinamo Zagreb, he regularly played in the 2004–05 UEFA Cup competition. He appeared in six matches and scored one goal during that time.

Success in the Netherlands

In 2005, Pranjić moved to the Netherlands to play for Heerenveen in the Eredivisie league. His strong performances as an attacking winger helped him return to the Croatian national team in 2007. He started the 2008–09 season very well, scoring four goals in his first three league games. On November 12, 2008, Pranjić scored his first hat-trick (three goals in one game) in the KNVB Cup. This happened in a big 7–0 win against Haaglandia. He also scored important goals against Ajax and PSV. At the end of the 2008–09 season, he won the KNVB Cup with Heerenveen. This was his last match for the club.

Time with Bayern Munich

In June 2009, Bayern Munich, a famous German club, announced that Pranjić would be joining them. In his first season, he found it hard to get a regular spot, starting only 14 matches. However, in his second season, he played more games because he was a versatile player and other teammates were injured.

Playing in Portugal, Spain, and Greece

After his contract with Bayern Munich ended, Pranjić joined Sporting CP in Portugal on July 13, 2012. He played nine games for them. In January 2013, he moved to Celta de Vigo in Spain on a loan deal until the end of the season. On August 30, 2013, Pranjić and Sporting ended their contract by agreement.

On September 2, 2013, it was officially announced that Pranjić had signed a three-year contract with Panathinaikos in Greece. He played his first game for them in a 1–1 draw against Platanias.

Later Career in Slovenia and Cyprus

On September 11, 2016, Pranjić joined Koper, a club in Slovenia. A year later, on July 21, 2017, he signed with Anorthosis in Cyprus. On July 1, 2019, Pranjić signed with Ayia Napa, also in Cyprus, where they played in the Cypriot Second Division.

Playing for Croatia

Starting with the Under-21 Team

Pranjić began his international career playing for the Croatian under-21 national team. He played 15 games and scored one goal for this team between 2002 and 2004.

Joining the Senior National Team

On November 16, 2004, Pranjić made his first appearance for the senior Croatian national team. This was in a friendly match against the Republic of Ireland. After not being called up for two years, he returned to the national team in February 2007 for a friendly game against Norway. Later that year, he also played in three qualifying matches for UEFA Euro 2008.

Euro 2008 and World Cup Appearances

At the UEFA Euro 2008 tournament, Croatia's coach, Slaven Bilić, asked Pranjić to play a defensive role, even though he usually played as a midfielder for his club. Pranjić was the only Croatian player to start all four games at Euro 2008. He provided an assist (a pass that leads to a goal) for Darijo Srna in Croatia's 2–1 win over Germany. He also assisted Ivan Klasnić for the only goal in their 1–0 victory against Poland.

He continued to be a regular player for the national team during their qualifying games for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. He played in nine matches during that campaign. On September 28, 2012, Pranjić decided to step away from the national team for a while.

On November 10, 2013, coach Niko Kovač called Pranjić back to the national team. This happened after another player, Ivan Strinić, got injured and couldn't play in the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying play-offs against Iceland. Pranjić was then chosen for Croatia's 23-player squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Pranjić's last game for Croatia was a Euro 2016 qualification match against Azerbaijan in September 2015. He played a total of 58 games for Croatia and scored 1 goal.

Managerial Career

After his playing career, Danijel Pranjić became a football manager. He started managing Croatian lower league clubs like Dubrava and Trnje. He also managed teams in Bosnia, such as Sloboda Tuzla and GOŠK Gabela. Additionally, he managed the Cypriot club Achyronas-Onisilos.
