Denis Voronenkov was a politician from Russia. He was born on April 10, 1971, and passed away on March 23, 2017. From 2011 to 2016, he was a member of the State Duma, which is like Russia's parliament. He belonged to different political parties during his career.
Denis grew up in a city called Gorky (now Nizhny Novgorod) in Russia. He went to a special military school and then joined the army. In 1999, he decided to leave the military and start working in politics. He became an advisor for the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation and later held important roles like Deputy Mayor. In 2011, he was elected to the State Duma. However, in the 2016 election, he lost his seat.
After losing his political seat, Denis moved to Ukraine with his wife, Maria Maksakova Jr.. He gave up his Russian citizenship. In Ukraine, he became a strong critic of Russian foreign policy and its president, Vladimir Putin. Even though he had voted for Russia to take over Crimea when he was in the State Duma, he later said this action was against the law. In 2017, Russian officials started investigating him for possible corruption.
Sadly, Denis Voronenkov was shot and killed in Kyiv, Ukraine, on March 23, 2017. Ukrainian officials believe his death was arranged by others.

Early Life and Family
Denis Voronenkov was born in Gorky, Russia, which is now called Nizhny Novgorod. His grandmother was from Ukraine, and his wife said he spent some of his childhood there.
In March 2015, Denis married Maria Maksakova Jr., who was also a politician and an opera singer. They met while working on a law about old cultural items. Both Denis and Maria had two children from earlier relationships. They had a son together in April 2016. Denis's older children are his daughter Xenia, born in 2000, and his son Nikolay.
Education and Military Service
Because his father was in the military, Denis went to a special military school in Leningrad. He finished school in 1988 and immediately joined the Soviet Army.
He continued his education while in the military. In 1995, he finished an officer's course at the Military University of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation. He then moved to the Military Prosecutor's Office. In 1996, he studied law at Ryazan State University. He earned advanced degrees in law in 1999 and 2009.

Working in Law and Government
Denis Voronenkov became a colonel in the Russian army. From 1995, he worked in military and federal law enforcement. He started as an investigator in the Military Prosecutor's Office. By 1999, he was a deputy prosecutor when he left the military to start a political career.
In 2000, Denis began working for the Unity party in the State Duma. In 2001, he became an advisor to the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation. After that, he served as the Deputy Mayor of Naryan-Mar and Deputy Governor of Nenets Autonomous District. He also worked for the Federal Drug Control Service of Russia from 2004 to 2007. Later, he became a university professor.
Political Journey
In 2011, Denis Voronenkov was elected to the State Duma as a representative for the Communist Party of the Russian Federation. This is the lower house of Russia's parliament.
In September 2016, he tried to be re-elected but did not win. He then left the State Duma in October. That same month, he announced that he had given up his Russian citizenship and moved to Ukraine. He became a Ukrainian citizen in December. Denis said he did not plan to get involved in Ukrainian politics. He was also removed from the Communist Party in 2016.
After moving to Ukraine, Denis became well-known for speaking out against Russian president Vladimir Putin. He also criticized Russia's actions towards Ukraine. Before he left Russia, he had voted in parliament to support Russia taking over Crimea. This caused some people in Ukraine to criticize him. However, he later said he was not actually in parliament that day.
In 2017, he strongly criticized Russia's involvement in Ukraine and other areas. In an interview, he compared Russia under Vladimir Putin to Nazi Germany. He called the taking of Crimea illegal and a mistake. He described the feeling in Russia as "total fear." At the time of his death, he was going to give evidence against a former Ukrainian president.
His Death
Denis Voronenkov was shot and killed in Kyiv, Ukraine, on March 23, 2017. This happened as he was leaving a hotel. His bodyguard was also hurt during the shooting.
Investigation into His Death
In March 2017, the National Guard of Ukraine identified the person who shot Denis as Pavlo Parshov. He was 28 years old and had been part of the National Guard. He died later from injuries he got during the shooting. Ukrainian police also looked for another person, Yaroslav Levenets, who they thought was involved.
