Devastator Peak, also known as The Devastator, is a mountain in southwestern British Columbia, Canada. It is the lowest and most southern of the six peaks that make up the larger Mount Meager massif. This peak is located about 55 kilometers (34 miles) west of a town called Bralorne.

What is Devastator Peak?

Devastator Peak is a special type of mountain called a volcanic plug. Imagine a volcano that used to be much bigger. Over a very long time, the softer parts of the volcano wore away, leaving behind only the hard rock that once filled its central vent. That hard rock is what we now see as Devastator Peak.

How Devastator Peak Formed

Devastator Peak is part of the Garibaldi Volcanic Belt. This belt is a chain of volcanoes in British Columbia. It is also connected to the larger Cascade Volcanic Arc, which stretches through parts of North America.

About 0.5 to 1.0 million years ago, Devastator Peak was the source of thick flows of lava. These ancient lava flows helped create other nearby features, like the rocky cliffs of Pylon Peak.

Why the Slopes are Unstable

The sides of Devastator Peak are not very stable. This is because they are made of weak rocks that have been changed by hot water and steam from inside the Earth. Because of this, there have been many recent debris flows. These are like fast-moving rivers of mud, rocks, and water that rush down the slopes and into Meager Creek.
