Dianella is a suburb located in Perth, Western Australia. It's part of the City of Stirling, which is a local government area responsible for services in the community.

The name Dianella comes from a small blue lily called Dianella revoluta. This plant, with its narrow leaves, used to grow everywhere in the area before houses were built.

History of Dianella

At first, Dianella grew very slowly. The land was sandy, like a Banksia sandplain, and people thought it wasn't good for farming. In the 1880s, much of Dianella was divided into smaller blocks. But still, not many people moved there.

By 1919, the only development was along Walter Road. This was just a track leading to dairy farms in the Morley area. Dianella used to be made up of several smaller places. These included North Inglewood, East Yokine, Morley Park, and Bedford Park. In 1958, they all joined together to form Dianella, which helped the area start to grow.

Most of the houses in Dianella were built in the 1960s. Building started north of Walter Road and Grand Promenade. The last big areas to be developed were St Andrews, Montclair Rise, and Dress Circle Estates. These were finished in the early 2000s. You can find all kinds of houses here. Some are older homes built after World War II, while others are large, modern two-storey houses.

Dianella was once a big centre for media in Perth and Western Australia. Three of Perth's main commercial television stations were located here. Channel 7 moved to Osborne Park in 2015. Channel 9 and Channel 10 left Dianella in 2016. They are now located in St Georges Terrace and Subiaco.

Fun and Facilities

Dianella has many small parks where you can play or relax. There's also a large regional open space. Vicinity Centres Dianella is the main shopping centre in the suburb. You can also find several smaller local shops.

For education, Dianella has a number of primary schools. Older students can go to high schools in nearby Mirrabooka and Morley.

Dianella Regional Open Space

The Dianella Regional Open Space is a big park area. It's located where Alexander Drive and Morley Drive meet. This space is a nice natural feature for the suburb. It also has many sports facilities. Lots of different sports are played here. These include lacrosse, football, little athletics, soccer, and cricket. You can also find many indoor sports activities.

Community Life

Dianella is home to a part of Perth's small Jewish community. This community is the third largest in Australia. Dianella has several important places for the community. These include a Jewish day school called Carmel. There is also a sports club, a home for older people (Maurice Zeffert Home), and a synagogue called "Dianella Shul." Some streets in the area have names linked to Jewish history, like Menora, Maccabean, and Golda Meir.

Dianella also has a part of Perth's Greek community. It's the second biggest hub for the Greek Orthodox Community in Perth. The largest is in Northbridge. In the early 1990s, the Greek community wanted a Greek Orthodox College. This school would help children of Greek background learn the Greek language and culture. Today, there is a Greek day school called St Andrew's Grammar. It's in the St Andrews Land Estate. There's also a small Greek Orthodox Church (Agios Nectarios). It's located in the northern part of the suburb, near the Dress Circle Land Estate. Next to the Greek Orthodox College, you'll find a Greek retirement home (Hellenic Community Aged Care). Some streets in the northern part of Dianella have Greek names, like Hellenic Drive.
