Where is Donnybrook?

Donnybrook is about 60 kilometers (37 miles) north of Brisbane, which is the capital city of Queensland. The closest big town is Caboolture, about 20 kilometers (12 miles) to the west.

The town is right on the coast of the Australian mainland. A narrow waterway called the Pumicestone Passage separates Donnybrook from Bribie Island. This passage is a popular place for boating and fishing.

Donnybrook's Story

The name Donnybrook was officially approved on October 1, 1975. People think the name might come from an old corroboree site. A corroboree is a traditional Aboriginal gathering. Another idea is that the name came from fights that happened between oyster gatherers who camped there on weekends.

Donnybrook started as a small community focused on fishing. Over time, it has grown into a popular place for tourists to visit.

The local post office, which was first called Pumicestone Post Office, opened on August 1, 1958. It was renamed Donnybrook in 1976.

In 1985, a road along the waterfront was named Grant Lane. This was done to celebrate Robert Grant's 90th birthday. Everyone knew him as "Pop." He was a very popular local person. Pop used to complain about the dust from cars on the unsealed road. A few years later, the road was finally sealed.

The Donnybrook District Bowls Club opened in 1980. Bowls is a sport where players roll balls towards a target. In 2018, the club started offering other activities like darts and fishing events.
