Avenula is a type of flowering plant that belongs to the grass family. You can find these plants mostly in Eurasia. Even though many names have been suggested for different kinds of Avenula, only one main species is officially recognized. This special species is called Avenula pubescens. People often know it as downy oat-grass or downy alpine oatgrass.

About Downy Oat-Grass

Avenula pubescens is the only species officially recognized in the Avenula group. It's a type of grass that grows in many places.

Where Does Downy Oat-Grass Live?

Downy oat-grass is naturally found across a huge area. It grows in Europe and Asia. You can find it all the way from Iceland and Portugal in the west. It stretches east to places like Xinjiang, Mongolia, and Siberia.

It has also spread to other parts of the world. In North America, you can find it in some places. These include states like Connecticut, Delaware, Minnesota, New Jersey, and Vermont. It also grows in Canadian provinces such as Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, and Saskatchewan. When a plant grows somewhere it wasn't originally from, we say it is "naturalized."
