Durham got its name from County Durham, England. This is where the first person to settle in the town came from. Before it was called Durham, it was known as Royallsborough. This name came from a person named Isaac Royall Jr.. The town was officially recognized on February 17, 1789.

The town is often called a "gateway" town. This is because it connects two important areas in Maine: the Greater Portland Area and the Lewiston–Auburn Area.
