Edson Omar Álvarez Velázquez, born on October 24, 1997, is a talented Mexican professional footballer. He plays either as a defensive-midfielder or a centre-back for the Premier League club West Ham United in England. He also captains the Mexico national team.

Early life
Edson Álvarez grew up in Tlalnepantla de Baz, a city north of Mexico City. His parents are Adriana Velázquez and Evaristo Álvarez. As a child, he helped his family make football kits for local teams. This was his first connection to the sport. At age 10, Edson joined the Pachuca football club. However, he left two years later because he was shorter than other players. He thought about quitting football, but his parents encouraged him. They believed he had the talent to become a professional player. Edson then tried out for Club América's youth team. After a three-month tryout, he made the team. He traveled three to four hours every day to get to practice. He spent almost 70% of his monthly salary on transportation. This shows his great dedication to football.
Club career
Starting with América
In 2014, when he was 16, Edson Álvarez joined Club América's youth system. He played for the under-17 team. The next year, he was promoted to América's second division team. In August 2016, first team coach Ignacio Ambríz called him up to the main squad. Edson made his first league appearance on October 29, 2016, at age 19. He played the entire game and was highly praised by fans. On December 25, he scored his first career goal in the Apertura final against Tigres UANL. For the 2017–18 season, he was given the number 4 jersey. On December 16, 2018, Edson scored two goals in the Apertura final against Cruz Azul. This helped América win their 13th league title. In February 2019, he played his 100th competitive game for América.
Moving to Ajax
On July 19, 2019, Edson Álvarez joined the Dutch club Ajax. He signed a five-year contract. Ajax paid about US$17 million for him. He was given the number 4 jersey. On August 17, Edson made his first appearance for Ajax. He came on as a substitute in a 4–1 league win. On August 29, he scored his first goal for Ajax in a UEFA Champions League play-off match. On September 17, he scored again in a Champions League group stage game against Lille. He was the first Mexican player to score in his Champions League debut. On March 21, 2021, Edson scored his first Eredivisie goal for Ajax. In April, he played the whole game in the Dutch Cup final, which Ajax won 2–1. At the end of his second season, he was nominated for the league's Player of the Year Award. In October 2021, Edson signed a new contract with Ajax until 2025. In April 2022, he played his 100th game for the club. This made him part of Ajax's Club van 100.
Playing for West Ham United
On August 10, 2023, Edson Álvarez moved to the English club West Ham United. He signed a five-year contract. The transfer fee was about £35 million. He was given the number 19 jersey. Edson became the fourth Mexican player to play for West Ham United. He made his debut on August 20, 2023, in a 3–1 win against Chelsea. On December 14, 2023, Edson scored his first goal for West Ham. This was in a Europa League match against SC Freiburg. On March 2, 2024, he scored his first Premier League goal against Everton.
International career
Youth Teams
Edson Álvarez played for Mexico's under-20 team. He was part of the squad for the 2017 CONCACAF U-20 Championship. He was even named in the tournament's best team. He also played in the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup, where he scored a winning goal against Vanuatu.
Senior National Team
On January 30, 2017, Edson Álvarez was called up to the senior national team. He made his debut on February 8 against Iceland. He was the youngest player on the squad for the Gold Cup. On July 17, he scored his first goal for the national team against Curaçao. He was the youngest Mexican player to score in a Gold Cup tournament at 19 years old. In May 2018, Edson was chosen for Mexico's squad for the World Cup. He was the youngest player on the team. He played in all of Mexico's group stage matches. In May 2019, he was part of the Gold Cup team again. Mexico won the tournament, and Edson played in the final. In October 2022, Edson was selected for Mexico's squad for the World Cup. He played in two group stage matches.
