History of Eggenwil
Eggenwil was first mentioned around the year 1160. This happened in an old document called the Acta Murensia, which was about a gift of land. The village and its church were given by Albert II, Count of Habsburg to Muri Abbey, a monastery.
Later, in 1415, the Swiss Confederates took control of the Aargau region from the Habsburg family. Some areas, including parts of Eggenwil, became known as the Freie Ämter (which means "free bailiwicks"). These areas were governed by several Swiss Confederates together. Other parts of Eggenwil became part of the County of Baden.
During a time called the Helvetic Republic (from 1798 to 1803), Eggenwil and a nearby town called Widen were combined into one municipality. But after this period, Eggenwil became its own independent municipality again.
The Village Church
The village church, named St. Lawrence's Church, was built a very long time ago, in 1064. In 1529, during the Protestant Reformation, it changed to a Swiss Reformed Church. The front part of the church, called the choir, was updated in 1683. Eggenwil has had its own church parish (a church district) since 1944.
