Elsmore is a small city in Allen County, Kansas, in the United States. In 2020, about 50 people lived there. The city's name, Elsmore, comes from a place called Elsinore. This is where William Shakespeare's famous play Hamlet takes place.

History of Elsmore
The original town of Elsmore was located a bit further west. It was near a place called Big Creek.
Founding the Town
On August 25, 1888, a group of people bought land for the new town. They were N.L. Ard, J.L. Roberts, J.A. Nicholson, W.D. and H.W. Cox, and O.P. Mattson. They chose this spot because the Missouri, Kansas & Texas Railroad was building a line nearby.
The railroad went from Kansas City to Parsons. The new town of Elsmore quickly became a busy place. People came there to trade goods and ship things by train.
Growth and Development
In 1909, Elsmore officially became an incorporated city. This means it got its own local government. By 1910, the town had grown to 216 people. It had a post office that opened way back in 1866.
Elsmore also had a bank and several stores. There were even some small factories. The town had telegraph and express services too.
Geography of Elsmore
Elsmore is in the southeastern part of Allen County. It's about 15 miles (24 km) southeast of Iola. Iola is the main city and county seat of Allen County.
Nearby Roads and Towns
U.S. Route 59 passes just west of Elsmore. There's also a short road called K-203. This road connects Elsmore to US-59.
The small city of Savonburg is about 3 miles (5 km) south. The larger city of Moran is about 9 miles (14 km) north along US-59.
