Emeli Sandé has a powerful singing voice. She wants her music to be remembered like that of Nina Simone, one of her favorite artists. Emeli first heard Nina Simone when she was eight years old. She was inspired by Simone's sad yet hopeful songs.

Sandé learned to play the piano at a young age. It was important to her that people knew she played, made, and wrote her own music. She wanted her songs to be honest and full of real feelings. She said that if she works on a song for too long, it usually means it won't work. The best ideas for songs come to her almost instantly.

She has written songs for many other artists. These include Leona Lewis and Susan Boyle. She also wrote songs for Cheryl Cole and Professor Green. Emeli says her songs are often about world peace and important issues.
