Early Life and Musical Start
Emily Wells was born in Amarillo, Texas, in the United States. Her father was a music minister. Emily started playing the violin when she was just four years old.
In 1990, her family moved to Indianapolis, Indiana. She lived there until 2000. After that, she began traveling a lot. She lived mostly in New York for a while. Later, she moved there permanently after spending eight years in Los Angeles.
Music Career Highlights
First Albums (2000-2010)
When Emily was thirteen, she started making her own recordings. She released them on cassette tapes. Her first official album was Beautiful Sleepyhead & the Laughing Yaks in 2006. Emily wrote, performed, produced, and mixed all the songs on this album herself.
Her second album, The Symphonies, came out later. On this album, she worked with bassist Joey Reina and drummer Sam Halterman. In 2009, Emily performed her song "Symphony 1 in the Barrel of a Gun" on the TV show Last Call with Carson Daly. In 2010, she moved to New York. She performed with singer Shilpa Ray, and The New Yorker magazine praised their show.
Mama Album and New Record Label (2012)
In 2012, Emily Wells released her album Mama. This album was released through Partisan Records. The main song from the album, "Mama's Gonna Give You Love," was featured in The New Yorker.
She also released a free remixed version of Mama. Many different artists helped remix the songs. Emily has also worked with Clint Mansell, a composer. She often performs live for radio stations and websites. These include Daytrotter, WYNC's Soundcheck, and KCRW.
Touring and Movie Music (2013)
Emily Wells has written articles about her tours for magazines. She has also appeared on NPR radio many times. In 2013, she wrote a song for the movie Stoker. She even toured South Korea to promote the film.
