Eren Derdiyok, born on June 12, 1988, is a former professional football player from Switzerland. He was a talented striker, known for scoring goals. Eren also played for the Swiss national team. He played for many different clubs in Europe and even spent a year playing in Uzbekistan.

Early Life and Beginnings
Eren Derdiyok was born in Basel, Switzerland. His family came from Turkey. He has both Swiss and Turkish citizenship.
Starting with Old Boys Basel
Eren started playing youth football at a local club in Basel called Old Boys. He quickly moved up through the different age groups. In 2005, he joined the first team, which played in the fourth division of Swiss football.
He became a regular player right away. In his first half-season, he scored 10 goals in just 18 games. In a cup match against FC Basel, Eren scored the only goal for Old Boys in a 6-1 loss. This goal caught the eye of a bigger club.
Professional Club Career
Joining FC Basel
FC Basel's coach, Christian Gross, noticed Eren's talent for scoring goals. He convinced Eren to join FC Basel for the 2006–07 season. Eren first played for Basel's Under-21 team, scoring 10 goals in 17 games.
Soon, he was called up to the main team. He made his first league appearance for Basel on February 11, 2007. He scored his first league goal for Basel on April 14, 2007. Basel finished second in the league that season. They also won the Swiss Cup, with Eren playing in the final.
Winning Titles with Basel
The 2007–08 season was very successful for Eren. He played more often and scored more goals. He even scored his first hat-trick (three goals in one game) for Basel in March 2008.
At the end of the 2007–08 season, Eren helped Basel win both the league championship and the Swiss Cup. This is called winning the "Double." He scored the first goal in the cup final, which Basel won 4-1.
In the 2008–09 season, Basel played in the UEFA Champions League. Eren scored an important goal that helped Basel reach the group stage. He also scored against FC Barcelona in a 1-1 draw. Eren left Basel at the end of this season. He played 119 games for the club and scored 43 goals.
Moving to Bayer Leverkusen

On May 28, 2009, Eren joined Bayer Leverkusen in Germany. He signed a four-year contract. He made his debut in a cup match on July 31, scoring the winning goal.
On August 8, 2009, he scored his first league goal in his first Bundesliga game. His goals helped Bayer Leverkusen start the season very well. In his first season, Eren scored 12 goals in 33 league matches. Bayer Leverkusen finished fourth, which meant they qualified for the UEFA Europa League.
Key Moments at Leverkusen
In the 2010–11 season, Eren continued to play an important role. He scored two goals in a cup match that Bayer Leverkusen won 11-1. He scored six goals in 32 league matches that season.
His third season, 2011–12, also saw some great moments. On October 1, 2011, Eren scored an amazing overhead kick goal against VfL Wolfsburg. On November 23, 2011, he scored a header against Chelsea in the Champions League, helping Leverkusen win 2-1. He also scored his first hat-trick for Leverkusen in a league game.
Time at Hoffenheim
In May 2012, Eren signed with 1899 Hoffenheim. He scored in his first game for the club. However, he found it difficult to score in league matches. His performance was criticized, and he played less often. He also had an injury that kept him out of games.
Loan Back to Leverkusen
On August 30, 2013, Eren returned to Bayer Leverkusen on a loan for one season. He hoped to play well again. However, he mostly stayed on the bench and did not play much. After the season, he went back to Hoffenheim.
Playing in Turkey
After his loan ended, Eren left Hoffenheim to join Kasımpaşa, a club in Turkey. He spent three seasons playing for this club in Istanbul.
On August 5, 2016, Eren signed a three-year contract with Galatasaray, another big Turkish club. He played for Galatasaray until 2019.
After Galatasaray, he joined Göztepe in July 2019. He played there for a year.
Later Career and Retirement
Eren then moved to Pakhtakor Tashkent in Uzbekistan in 2020. He played there for two seasons. In 2021, he joined Ankaragücü back in Turkey. His contract with Ankaragücü ended in January 2023.
On June 23, 2023, Eren joined Schaffhausen in Switzerland. However, he only played four games in six months. On January 3, 2024, Eren Derdiyok announced that he was retiring from professional football. He will stay at FC Schaffhausen to help the head coach and work on getting his own coaching license.
International Career for Switzerland
Eren Derdiyok made his first appearance for the Swiss national team on February 6, 2008. He played against England at Wembley Stadium. He scored a goal with his very first touch of the ball!
He was part of the Swiss squad for UEFA Euro 2008. At 19 years old, he was the youngest player in the tournament. He also played for Switzerland in the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
On May 26, 2012, Eren scored his first international hat-trick. This happened when Switzerland beat Germany 5-3 in a friendly game. He was not chosen for the 2014 FIFA World Cup squad. However, his good play for Kasımpaşa helped him get selected for UEFA Euro 2016.
