Erick Silva's Fighting Journey
Starting Out in MMA
Erick Silva grew up in Vila Velha, Brazil. He trained at X-Gym, a famous gym. There, he trained with other well-known fighters. These included Anderson Silva and Jacare Souza.
Becoming a Champion in Jungle Fight
Erick Silva joined Jungle Fight, a big fighting promotion in Brazil. His first fight there was at Jungle Fight 9. He won this fight in the third round. He used a move called a "rear naked choke."
He won his next two fights in Jungle Fight by decision. One of his most unusual fights was at Jungle Fight 17. This event was held outdoors in the rain. During this fight, Erick accidentally hit his opponent with an illegal knee. This meant the fight ended with "no contest," so it didn't count as a win or loss.
After that, Erick won his next fight by TKO (Technical Knockout). This means the referee stopped the fight because one fighter couldn't defend themselves.
Winning the Welterweight Title
Erick then entered a tournament to become the first Jungle Fight Welterweight Champion. He had to win two fights on the same night. In his first tournament fight, he faced Gil de Freitas. Erick used his striking skills early on. Later, he used a "guillotine choke" to win.
In the final, he fought Francisco Ayon from Mexico. Erick quickly took Ayon to the ground. He then used an "arm triangle choke" to win the fight. This made Erick Silva the first-ever Jungle Fight Welterweight Champion.
Fighting in the UFC
Erick Silva joined the UFC in 2011. His first UFC fight was at UFC 134. He won very quickly by TKO in the first round.
A Disqualification and Comeback
At UFC 142, Erick fought Carlo Prater. Erick knocked Prater down early in the fight. However, the referee stopped the fight and disqualified Erick. This was because Erick accidentally hit the back of Prater's head. Even though he seemed to win, the disqualification stood.
Erick bounced back at UFC on FX 3. He won his fight against Charlie Brenneman with a "rear-naked choke."
Tough Fights and Big Bonuses
Erick then faced Jon Fitch at UFC 153. He lost this fight by decision. However, their exciting performance earned both fighters a "Fight of the Night" bonus. This bonus is given for fights that are very entertaining.
Erick had to pull out of a fight due to an injury in 2013. Later that year, he won against Jason High with a special move called a "triangle armbar submission." This earned him another "Submission of the Night" bonus.
He lost his next fight by knockout. But he quickly won his next one against Takenori Sato by TKO. This win earned him a "Performance of the Night" bonus.
Erick then had a very tough fight against Matt Brown. He lost this fight, but it was so exciting that it earned him another "Fight of the Night" bonus.
He continued to win his next two fights by submission. He earned another "Performance of the Night" bonus for one of these wins.
Later UFC Challenges
In 2015, Erick was set to fight Rick Story, but he had visa problems. The fight was rescheduled, but Story got injured. Erick then fought Neil Magny and lost by a close decision.
At UFC 196 in 2016, Erick faced Nordine Taleb. During the fight, Erick tried to touch gloves with Taleb as a sign of sportsmanship. But he immediately threw a punch. He lost the fight by knockout. Erick later apologized on social media, saying his action was "unethical."
After this, Erick started his own fight team called Tiger's Den MMA. He wanted to be closer to his son. He won his next fight against Luan Chagas by submission. This exciting fight earned both fighters another "Fight of the Night" bonus.
Erick's last two fights in the UFC were losses by TKO and decision. His contract with the UFC ended after his fight with Jordan Mein.
After the UFC
Legacy Fighting Alliance
After leaving the UFC, Erick Silva joined Legacy Fighting Alliance (LFA). He won his first fight there by submission in the first round.
Bellator MMA
In 2018, Erick signed with Bellator MMA. He was supposed to fight Lorenz Larkin, but an injury made him pull out.
He made his Bellator debut in 2019 against Yaroslav Amosov. He lost this fight by decision. His last professional fight was against Paul Daley in June 2019, which he also lost by decision.
Erick Silva announced his retirement from MMA in 2022. He shared that he had a heart attack due to problems from Covid-19.
