Erick Silva (born June 21, 1984) is a Brazilian former mixed martial artist. He competed in the Welterweight division, which is a specific weight class in the sport. Erick was a professional fighter from 2005 to 2019. He fought in major organizations like the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and Bellator MMA. He was also the first-ever Welterweight Champion in Jungle Fight. Erick is the older brother of Gabriel Silva, who is also a UFC fighter.

Erick Silva's Fighting Journey

Starting Out in Brazil

Erick Silva grew up in Vila Velha, Brazil. He trained at X-Gym, a famous gym where many top fighters learned their skills. Some of his training partners included well-known names like Anderson Silva.

Becoming a Champion in Jungle Fight

Erick joined a fighting promotion called Jungle Fight. He quickly showed his talent, winning several fights.

One of his most memorable fights was at Jungle Fight 17. It was held outdoors, and it started raining heavily just before the event. This made it one of the wettest fights in MMA history! In that fight, Erick accidentally hit his opponent in an illegal way, so the fight was declared a "no contest." This means it didn't count as a win or a loss for either fighter.

Later, Erick entered a tournament to become the first Jungle Fight Welterweight Champion. He had to win two fights on the same night! First, he beat Gil de Freitas using his strong striking and ground skills. Then, in the final, he faced Francisco Ayon. Erick quickly took Ayon down and won by a special hold called an arm triangle choke. This made him the first Jungle Fight Welterweight Champion.

Fighting in the UFC

In 2011, Erick Silva signed with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), which is one of the biggest MMA organizations in the world.

His first UFC fight was against Luis Ramos, and Erick won very quickly by punches in the first round.

In his next fight, Erick faced Carlo Prater. Erick won the fight, but the referee stopped it and said Erick had hit Prater in an illegal spot (the back of the head). So, Erick was disqualified, and the win was taken away.

Erick then had several more exciting fights in the UFC:

  • He won against Charlie Brenneman with a rear-naked choke.
  • He had a tough fight against Jon Fitch, which was so exciting that both fighters earned a "Fight of the Night" bonus. Erick lost this fight by decision.
  • He won against Jason High with a special submission move called a triangle armbar, earning him a "Submission of the Night" bonus.
  • He won against Takenori Sato very quickly by punches, earning a "Performance of the Night" bonus.
  • He had another thrilling "Fight of the Night" against Matt Brown, but he lost this one.
  • He won two more fights by submission, earning another "Performance of the Night" bonus and a win against Josh Koscheck.

In 2016, during a fight against Nordine Taleb, Erick tried to touch gloves (a sign of sportsmanship) but then immediately threw a punch. This move was seen as unfair by many. Erick later apologized on social media, saying it was "unethical."

After this, Erick decided to start his own fight team, Tiger's Den MMA, to be closer to his son. He continued to fight in the UFC until 2017. His last UFC fight was against Jordan Mein, which he lost by decision.

After the UFC

After leaving the UFC, Erick Silva joined Legacy Fighting Alliance (LFA) and won his first fight there by submission.

He then signed with Bellator MMA, another major fighting organization. He fought twice in Bellator, losing both fights by decision.

Erick Silva announced his retirement from MMA in 2022. He shared that he had suffered a heart attack due to health problems from Covid-19.

Personal Life

Erick Silva is married to Isabela, and they have two sons together.
