Eutaw (pronounced YOO-taw) is a city in Greene County, Alabama, United States. It is also the county seat, which means it's the main town where the county government is located. In 2020, about 2,937 people lived there. The city got its name from the Battle of Eutaw Springs, an important battle during the American Revolutionary War.

History of Eutaw

Early Days and Growth

Eutaw was planned out in December 1838. This happened when people in Greene County decided to move their main government office from a town called Erie. Eutaw officially became a city on January 2, 1841.

A Time of Change

After the American Civil War, during a period called the Reconstruction Era, Eutaw saw some difficult times. This was a time when the country was trying to rebuild and bring everyone together again. There were some acts of rebellion and violence in Eutaw during this period. For example, in 1870, a lawyer named Alexander Boyd was killed. Later that year, during an election, an event known as the Eutaw riot happened near the courthouse, where some people were killed.

Historic Buildings

Eutaw is special because it has many old buildings. There are twenty-seven antebellum structures, which means they were built before the Civil War. Many of these are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which helps protect them. Some famous ones include the Coleman-Banks House and the First Presbyterian Church. The downtown area, called the Greene County Courthouse Square District, is also a historic place.

Important People and Groups

James Bevel, a key leader in the Civil Rights Movement, was buried in Eutaw in 2008. He helped plan important events like the 1963 Birmingham Children's Crusade. This movement worked to end unfair treatment and gain equal rights for all people.

Eutaw is also home to the Roman Catholic Convent of Our Lady of Consolata. The Consolata Sisters, a group of nuns, live there. They are known for their helpful work in the community, assisting people in need.
