In the UEFA Cup competition, Ewerthon scored two goals in the knockout stages. He also set up two goals in the first leg of the semi-final against AC Milan, which Dortmund won 4–0. Dortmund reached the UEFA Cup Final but lost 3–2 to Feyenoord. By the end of the 2001–02 season, Ewerthon had played thirty-four games and scored twelve goals.
