Playing for Borussia Dortmund
Borussia Dortmund in Germany was one of the clubs interested in Ewerthon. On 22 September 2001, he signed a five-year contract with them. The transfer cost about €7.5 million.
Ewerthon made a great start in his first game for Borussia Dortmund on 29 September 2001. He scored a goal and helped Jan Koller score another, leading to a 2–1 win against St. Pauli. In the next game, he helped set up the first goal and then scored himself in a 2–1 win over Borussia Mönchengladbach. He quickly became a regular player under coach Matthias Sammer. Ewerthon scored three goals in three matches in November and December 2001. His goals helped the club win the Bundesliga title for the sixth time in the 2001–02 season.
In the UEFA Cup, Ewerthon scored two goals in the knockout stages. He also helped set up two goals in a 4–0 win against AC Milan in the semi-final first leg. Before the 2004–05 season, there were rumors that Ewerthon might leave for clubs in Italy or Spain, but he stayed. He started the season well, scoring the first two league goals for his team. He continued to be a regular starter. His goal-scoring form continued in September, with five goals, including two against FC Bayern Munich. In the 2006–07 season, Ewerthon started well, scoring against Deportivo de La Coruña and Mallorca. He said he wanted to score even more goals than the previous season. However, after new players joined, his chances to play regularly were fewer. He also had some injuries. Despite this, Ewerthon scored two goals in two matches in November 2006. This red card meant he missed the last game of the season and lost his chance to win the top scorer award. However, Ewerthon helped the team get promoted back to La Liga after just one season in the second division. He scored twenty-eight goals in thirty-seven games that season.
In the 2009–10 season, Ewerthon missed the first four league games due to a suspension from the previous season. He returned on 27 September 2009 in a 3–0 win against Getafe.
