History of Exeter

Exeter got its name from the city of Exeter in Devon, England.

In 1756, a man named John Tunnicliff bought a very large piece of land. This land, about 12,000 acres (49 square kilometers), included the area where Exeter is now. He bought it from David Schuyler and others. However, he had to wait to settle the town until after the French and Indian War was over.

The first settlements in Exeter were made around 1769. These early homes were built near a place called Angel Hill. The town of Exeter was officially formed in 1799. It was created from a part of the Town of Richfield.
