Ezekiel Kemboi has won many big races. He earned two gold medals at the Olympic Games. He also won four gold medals at the World Championships in Athletics. This makes him one of the greatest steeplechase runners of all time! His fastest time in the 3000 metres steeplechase is 7 minutes and 55.76 seconds.

Ezekiel Kemboi: A Champion Runner

Early Life and First Wins

Ezekiel Kemboi was born in Matira, a place near Kapsowar in Kenya. He finished high school in 1999. He didn't start running track and field until after he left school.

A talent scout named Paul Ereng noticed him. In 2001, Kemboi won the African Junior Athletics Championships. This was a great start, even though he fell during the race!

In 2002, he came in second at the 2002 Commonwealth Games. Another Kenyan runner, Stephen Cherono, won that race. Later that year, Kemboi finished fourth at the African Championships in Athletics. But he was given a bronze medal after the original winner was disqualified.

Olympic and World Championship Success

In 2003, Kemboi had a very close race at the 2003 World Championships in Athletics. He battled with his former teammate, Saif Saeed Shaheen, who was now running for Qatar. Shaheen won, and Kemboi took home a silver medal. Later that year, Kemboi won a gold medal at the Athletics at the 2003 All-Africa Games.

At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Kemboi was a top favorite. He, along with two other Kenyan runners, Brimin Kipruto and Paul Kipsiele Koech, led the race. Kemboi won the gold medal, just ahead of Kipruto. This was a huge win for Kenya!

In 2005, he won another silver medal at the 2005 World Championships in Athletics. In 2006, he won gold at the 2006 Commonwealth Games. He also got a silver medal at the 2007 World Championships in Athletics.

Later Career and Retirement

Ezekiel Kemboi competed at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He finished seventh, which was not his best result. But he bounced back strong! In 2009, he won his first gold medal at the 2009 World Championships in Athletics. This was a big achievement after winning three silver medals before.

He continued his winning streak. He won gold again at the 2011 World Championships in Athletics in South Korea. Then, at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Kemboi won his second Olympic gold medal! He finished the race in 8 minutes and 18.56 seconds.

In 2013, Kemboi won his third straight gold medal at the World Championships. And in 2015, he won his fourth gold medal in a row at the 2015 World Championships in Athletics. This set a new record for the most World Championship medals in the steeplechase.

At the Rio Olympics 2016, Kemboi initially won a bronze medal. However, he was later disqualified because he stepped outside the track during the race. The bronze medal was then given to another runner. After this, he announced his retirement. But he changed his mind and competed one last time at the 2017 World Championships in Athletics. He finished 11th in that race.
