Fallbrook is a community in northern San Diego County, California. It's a special kind of place called a census-designated place, which means it's a community that isn't officially a city but is still counted by the census. In 2020, about 32,267 people lived there. Fallbrook is located right next to Camp Pendleton, a big base for the U.S. Marines. It's famous for its many avocado farms and is even called the "Avocado Capital of the World"!

History of Fallbrook

The Fallbrook area was first settled by the Payomkawichum people. Later, Spanish missionaries called them Luiseños in the late 1700s. These native people built large villages and grew oak groves. One important village site is now known as Live Oak County Park.

The first permanent settlement recorded by non-native people happened in 1846. This was during the time when California was part of Mexico. Ysidro Alvarado was given a large piece of land called Rancho Monserate by the governor, Pio Pico.

Rancho Monserate was huge, covering about 13,323 acres. It stretched from the San Luis Rey River in the south to Monserate Mountain in the east.

In the 1860s, Jose Maria Pico, a nephew of Pio Pico, lived in the area where Fallbrook High School is today. His family was among the first to register to vote there in 1868.

One of the earliest pictures of the area is an oil painting from 1870. It's called Roping the Bear at Santa Margarita Rancho and shows Mexican cowboys catching a grizzly bear.

Later, a family from Canada, Vital Reche and his family, settled north of Alvarado's ranch. This spot is now Live Oak Park. They named their new community Fall Brook after their old home in Pennsylvania.

Oak trees were the main trees in Fallbrook for a long time. By the 1920s, olives became a big crop. This continued through World War II. However, over time, farmers started growing more avocados and flowers instead.

In 2007, big wildfires broke out across San Diego County. On October 21, the Rice Canyon Fire reached Fallbrook. This caused everyone to evacuate their homes. More than 200 homes and other buildings were burned in the fire.

Geography and Climate

The Fallbrook community covers about 44 square miles (110 km2). The main area, called a CDP, is about 17.6 square miles (45.6 km2). Most of this area is land, with a very small part being water.

Native evergreen oak trees are very common in Fallbrook. In some places, they form thick woods, like in the Live Oak Park area. Another common plant type is chaparral brushland. The most common trees that were brought to the area are avocados and eucalyptus.

Weather in Fallbrook

Fallbrook has a pleasant climate with an average year-round temperature of 64 degrees Fahrenheit (18 degrees Celsius). Ocean breezes keep the air from being too humid.

The average high temperature during the day is 75°F (24°C). In summer, temperatures can sometimes go above 90°F (32°C). Most of the area doesn't get frost. During the coldest times, the average nighttime temperature is about 43°F (6°C). Because it's close to the ocean, mornings often start with fog, and afternoons can be windy.

Fallbrook gets about 14 inches (36 cm) of rain each year. Most of this rain falls between November and April. The surrounding hills get more rain, up to 20 inches (51 cm). This climate is perfect for growing avocados, strawberries, tomatoes, and many other fruits, vegetables, and flowers that like warm weather.
