Exploring Fieldbrook's Location

Fieldbrook is found on California's North Coast. It is about 300 miles (480 km) north of San Francisco. The community is also about 65 miles (105 km) south of the Oregon state line.

Fieldbrook's Natural Surroundings

Fieldbrook is right next to a thick redwood forest. This area was once very important for lumber companies. Many years ago, these companies were very busy here.

Nearby Towns and Cities

Fieldbrook is about 6 miles (10 km) east of McKinleyville. McKinleyville is a larger town by the sea. The Arcata-Eureka Airport is also close by. Fieldbrook is about 10 miles (16 km) northeast of Arcata. It is also about 18.2 miles (29.3 km) north of Eureka. Eureka is the main city in Humboldt County.

Fieldbrook's Road Connections

Fieldbrook is located where Murray Road turns into Fieldbrook Road. The community is at the northern edge of a busy area. This area follows US Highway 101. About 80% of Humboldt County's people live here. Most businesses are also found in this corridor.

Changes in the Community

In the 1990s, Fieldbrook was a very quiet country place. Over time, things have changed a lot. The local timber industry became less active. More people started working from home. Also, the North Coast became a popular place for people to retire.

Fieldbrook's Mild Climate

Fieldbrook has mild weather all year. Summer temperatures usually stay below 75°F (24°C). Winter nights rarely drop below 38°F (3°C). This pleasant weather has made the area more popular.

New Homes and Developments

Because of these changes, Fieldbrook has become more developed. Large ranch-style homes are now common. These homes are often on big 5-acre (2-hectare) lots. They are located between timber areas. Some large timber areas have even become gated communities.

Community Features and Activities

Fieldbrook has a few paved and unpaved roads. Along these roads, you can find modest homes. There is also an elementary school and two churches. The community has a general store, a winery, and an apple orchard. These places often host public events.

Connecting to Blue Lake

Larger homes that are part of the Fieldbrook community continue south. Fieldbrook Road goes inland and uphill for 6 miles (10 km). It leads to the small city of Blue Lake. Blue Lake has about 1,200 people. From Blue Lake, the road connects to State Highway 299. This winding road crosses the mountains. It connects to Interstate 5 in Redding, about 90 miles (145 km) east.

The Mad River and Local Wildlife

Fieldbrook is on the north bank of the Mad River. This river flows into the Pacific Ocean. The Mad River provides water for many people in Humboldt County. However, Fieldbrook's small population does not affect the river's flow much.

Redwood Forests and Wildlife

The north side of Fieldbrook Road has a second-growth redwood forest. This means the trees are growing back from old stumps. The forest canopy can reach 200 to 300 feet (60 to 90 meters) high. A narrow area next to the road is left untouched. This makes it look like an old, untouched forest to visitors. Beyond this area, most timber tracts have been growing for at least seven years. This creates a wild area, almost like a park. The region is full of wildlife. You can find animals like deer, elk, foxes, raccoons, and sometimes even a black bear or cougar.

Fieldbrook's Past

A post office operated in Fieldbrook from 1902 to 1932. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, much of Fieldbrook was owned by lumber companies. Railroad lines ran through Fieldbrook to the Humboldt Bay. These lines helped transport timber.
