Fun Things to Do and See in Flagler Beach

Flagler Beach has many interesting places and activities. It's known for its relaxed atmosphere and beautiful natural surroundings.

A "Cool" Small Town

In 2013, Budget Travel Magazine chose Flagler Beach as a finalist for "America's Coolest Small Town." The magazine said it was very different from nearby Daytona Beach. Flagler Beach attracts more sea turtles and whales than spring breakers.

The town is a thin strip of land between the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway. It has stayed less developed than other places nearby. Its six miles of beautiful sand look orange because of crushed coquina shells. There is only one fishing pier on the beach. The town has a calm, old-fashioned feel. You can find unique places like Grampa's Uke Joint, which sells ukuleles. There's also High Tides at Snack Jack, a 1950s fish shack. Surfers love it for its special dishes like tuna reubens.

A Great Place to Retire

Where to Retire magazine also recognized Flagler Beach. They named it one of the best places to retire in Florida. This shows that people of all ages enjoy the city's peaceful environment.

Discovering History at the Flagler Beach Historical Museum

The Flagler Beach Historical Museum is a great place to learn about Florida's past. It focuses on the history of Flagler Beach and Flagler County. The museum has a wide range of items, from very old bones to space-related objects.

  • Ancient Times: You can see pottery from the Orange Period. These pieces were made by local native people between 2000 BCE and 500 CE. There are also arrowheads and other tools from early Native American life. All these items were found right in Flagler County.
  • European Influence: Florida was ruled by different European countries. These included Spain, England, and America. The museum shows items from this time, like tools from old mills and plantations. You can also see buttons and bottles from early missions. These items tell stories about the people who lived here long ago. For example, there are items from the Mala Compra Plantation. This plantation belonged to Joseph Hernandez, who was the first Hispanic congressman in the U.S.
  • Modern History: The museum also covers the late 1800s and early 1900s. You can learn about the area's economy. This included farming cabbage and potatoes, the timber industry, and railroads. There are also items from turpentine camps. Displays show how Flagler Beach grew into a seaside resort. You can see things from the first families who bought land and built the town.
  • Recent Past: Other exhibits include items from the early city government. There's information about the county's Old Brick Road and the Flagler Beach Hotel. You can also find items from World War II, the A1A highway, and Marineland. The museum also features local groups from 1925 onwards. These include the Flagler Beach Fire Department, Boy Scouts of Flagler, and local schools.

Flagler Beach Fire Department

The Flagler Beach Fire Department started in 1926. It was created by the Town of Flagler Beach's Commission. Today, Flagler Beach has about 5,500 people living there all year.

The fire department responds to about 1,500 calls every year. It has a team of 16 full-time professional firefighters. They work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This means they are always ready to help, every day of the year.
