History of Franklin Square
What we know today as Franklin Square was once open land. It was part of the Hempstead Plains, a large, flat area. Early European settlers used this land for grazing animals and later for farming. The southern part of the area had forests with oak and dogwood trees.
In 1643, some settlers bought about 100 square miles of land from local Native American tribes. This large area included much of what is now Hempstead and North Hempstead.
Famous Visitors and Early Growth
In 1790, George Washington, who was the first U.S. President, visited Long Island. He wrote in his diary that the area was mostly treeless. Later, in 1840, the famous poet Walt Whitman worked as a schoolmaster in the Trimming Square school district for three months.
In 1852, a man named Louis Schroeher built a hotel near a tollgate. This hotel helped bring more visitors and immigrants, often from Germany, to the quiet farming community. Many of these new residents came from New York City.
From Farms to Homes
The number of people living in Franklin Square grew steadily. After World War II, many people moved out of New York City to live in the suburbs on Long Island. By 1952, all the farms in Franklin Square were replaced by new houses. These homes were filled with families moving from the city.
Why the Name Changed
The area was first called Trimming Square. This name might have come from the sheep farming that happened there. Farmers would bring sheep to the area for "trimming" or separation. This name was used until 1851, when it changed to Washington Square, honoring George Washington.
In the 1870s, locals wanted to open a U.S. post office. However, the Postal Service said there were already too many places in New York named Washington. So, the community changed its name again. They chose Franklin Square, possibly to honor Benjamin Franklin, a famous American inventor and statesman.
Trying to Become a Village
In 1929, people in Franklin Square tried to make their community an official village. They wanted it to be called the "Incorporated Village of Franklin Square." But the Town of Hempstead said no. Not enough residents supported the idea, so the plan was stopped.
Geography
Franklin Square covers about 2.9 square miles (7.46 square kilometers) of land. It has no water areas.
It shares borders with several other communities:
- To the north: Stewart Manor
- To the northeast: Garden City and Garden City South

- To the east: West Hempstead
- To the west: Elmont
