Gabrielle Lemos "Gabi" Garcia (born November 17, 1985) is a Brazilian mixed martial artist and grappler. She is known as one of the most successful female fighters in Brazilian jiu-jitsu history. Gabi is also a member of the IBJJF Hall of Fame.

Early Life and Training

Gabi Garcia was born on November 17, 1985, in Porto Alegre, Brazil. When she was younger, Gabi enjoyed playing many sports. These included volleyball, team handball, and field hockey.

At age 13, Gabi and her family moved to São Paulo. Around this time, her uncle helped her start training in jiu-jitsu. Before becoming a full-time fighter, she studied advertising at university.

Jiu-Jitsu and Grappling Career

Gabi Garcia trains in São Paulo with Fabio Gurgel. She is part of the Alliance team. She has won many championships in her career. These include four Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) championships. She has also won nine World Jiu-Jitsu Championships.

In 2013, Gabi's results from the IBJJF World Jiu-Jitsu Championships were removed. This happened because she tested positive for a banned substance. However, after a review, it was found that she was not at fault. She was allowed to keep competing.

Key Wins and Challenges

In 2019, Gabi Garcia made history. She became the first woman to win four ADCC gold medals. She won her final match against Carina Santi.

In February 2021, Gabi faced Nathiely de Jesus at Who's Number One (WNO). Nathiely de Jesus won the match. This made her the first woman to beat Gabi Garcia in both gi and no-gi matches. After this loss, Gabi challenged other famous grapplers.

Gabi returned to WNO in September 2021 for a championship tournament. She lost to Amanda Leve in the first round. This was a big surprise because Amanda was smaller than Gabi. Amanda controlled most of the match.

At the 2021 IBJJF World Championships in December, Gabi Garcia was submitted for the first time in her black belt career. This happened in a match against Yara Soares. After this competition, Gabi decided to retire from IBJJF events.

Recent Competitions

Gabi Garcia was invited to the 2022 ADCC World Championship. She won her first match with an armbar. However, she lost in the semi-final to Amy Campo. Gabi then won the bronze medal by default.

On March 30, 2023, Gabi Garcia earned her black belt in judo.

She was invited to compete at the 2024 ADCC World Championship. She also competed in a special match against Craig Jones. She lost this match by submission.

Instructor Lineage

Gabi Garcia's jiu-jitsu training comes from a long line of masters:

Mixed Martial Arts Career

Her first MMA fight was on December 31, 2015. She faced Lei'D Tapa for Rizin Fighting Federation. Gabi won the fight in the first round.

In her second fight, she won against Anna Malyukova in April 2016. She won by armbar submission. For her third fight, Gabi defeated Destanie Yarbrough in September 2016. She won with a submission move.

Gabi was set to fight Shinobu Kandori in December 2016. But Kandori got injured. Yumiko Hotta replaced her. Gabi won this fight in the first round.

Her next fight was in July 2017 against Oksana Gagloeva. The fight ended very quickly. It was called a "no contest" because of an accidental eye poke.

Gabi was supposed to fight Shinobu Kandori again in December 2017. But the fight was canceled. Gabi missed the required weight for the match.

Gabi faced Barbara Nepomuceno in December 2018. She won this fight by submission in the first round.

Return to MMA

In 2023, Gabi Garcia announced she would return to professional MMA. She planned to compete at a lower weight. In February 2024, she confirmed a contract for a heavyweight title fight. She was scheduled for a rematch against Barbara Nepomuceno in April 2024. However, this fight was canceled due to floods affecting Gabi's family in Brazil.

Shoot Boxing

Gabi Garcia also tried shoot boxing in July 2017. She fought Megumi Yabushita. The match was declared a "no contest." This happened because Gabi used illegal kicks when her opponent was on the ground.
