Making the Show
The idea for Genie in the House came from a team of creators. These were Phil Ox, Steven Bawol, Isabelle Dubernet, and Eric Führer. It was a joint project between French and English companies. The show was made in English by a French company called Moi j'aime la television.
Choosing the Title
At first, the show had a different working title: You Wish!. This name was even used for the pilot episode. However, the creators found out there was already an American TV show called You Wish. So, they decided to change the name to Genie in the House.
The Theme Song
The catchy theme song was written especially for the show. Jean de Aguiar created the music, and Kevin Eldon wrote the lyrics. A singer named Lorraine Pearson performs the song.
Filming Locations and Global Reach
The first season of Genie in the House was filmed at Elstree Studios in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire. It first aired on May 29, 2006. The second season started filming at the BBC Elstree Centre in June 2007.

Meet the Characters
The show features a fun cast of characters. Let's learn more about them!
Adil the Genie
Adil (Jordan Metcalfe) looks like a 15-year-old, but he's actually 1500 years old! He was born in the city of Balamkadaar. Adil went to a special Genie School. One day, he dared to climb into a lamp, which was strictly forbidden. He got stuck inside!
Later, 40 thieves stole the lamp. It was forgotten in Ali Baba's cave for about 100 years. Eventually, the lamp ended up in the Norton family's attic. Adil is proud to be a genie. He always wants to help his new masters, Emma and Sophie.
However, Adil wasn't the best student at Genie School. He often skipped classes and didn't finish his training. This means his magic doesn't always work perfectly. Most wishes he grants turn out "approximately" right, leading to funny problems. Adil is usually the cause of all the adventures. He always wears his red pantaloons, red waistcoat, and red turban.
Philip Norton
Philip (Adam Morris) is Emma and Sophie's dad. He is a talented designer. Philip is always busy meeting deadlines for his boss, Max. On top of that, he has to raise two teenage girls. With Adil the genie around, Philip sometimes feels a bit overwhelmed.
Philip has strict rules about Adil's magic. He forbids Adil from granting wishes to Emma and Sophie for three main reasons:
- Getting wishes easily can lead to bad habits.
- If anyone finds out about Adil, their lives could become very complicated.
- Adil's magic often goes wrong, causing lots of trouble.
If the girls break this rule, Philip has ways to punish them. He might ground them, take away their pocket money, or stop them from visiting their aunt.
Even though he dislikes magic, Philip likes Adil as a person. Adil's presence means Philip isn't the only man in the house. They can watch sports together and play tennis. Philip has even made Adil a fan of many sports. But if Adil does grant wishes to the girls, he gets punished. The worst punishment is being locked in his lamp for a whole weekend! Philip also avoids using Adil's magic himself.
Sophie Norton
Sophie (Katie Sheridan) is the older sister. She loves learning how the world works. Her favorite subjects are physics, chemistry, history, and geography. Sophie dreams of going to university to study many different languages and topics. She doesn't seem to like drama class, though.
On her days off, Sophie likes to do many activities. She enjoys sports and educational trips. She isn't very interested in romance. Sometimes, she doesn't even notice when boys like her until Emma points it out. Sophie thinks Adil is great but sometimes clueless. She loves answering his endless questions. Even though she knows the risks, she has sometimes broken her dad's rules to make wishes. She tries to be very careful when she does.
Emma Norton
Emma (Vicky Longley) is the younger sister, a year younger than Sophie. Unlike Sophie, Emma finds schoolwork quite boring. She manages to pass her classes without too much trouble, but she isn't a brilliant student. She does enjoy reading, but she prefers fun stories over textbooks.
On her days off, Emma loves to hang out with friends. She enjoys going to the movies, painting, shopping, designing, singing (even if she's not good), watching TV, going to parties, and dancing. She loves her friends, and her favorite topic is boys. Emma gets along well with Adil. She loves hearing his wild stories, whether they are true or not. She knows Adil's magic can go wrong, but it doesn't bother her. In fact, she often finds the silly situations his magic creates to be fun. Emma loves designing clothes and hopes to become a famous fashion designer.
Caroline Smart
Caroline (Victoria Gay) was Philip's helper around the house and with the girls. She lived next door but convinced Philip to give her a key to the house. This way, she could come and go as needed. Caroline's character was not in the later seasons. It was mentioned that she moved to France and got married.
