George Crockett Strong (born October 16, 1832 – died July 30, 1863) was an important general during the American Civil War. He fought for the Union side as a brigadier general.

Life and Military Career
Early Life and Education
George Crockett Strong was born in Stockbridge, Vermont. He went to school at Williston Seminary. Later, he studied at Union College. He then joined the U.S. Military Academy in West Point. He graduated from West Point in 1857.
Serving in the Union Army
Strong began his military career as a lieutenant. He worked for General McDowell at the First Battle of Bull Run. This was one of the first big battles of the Civil War. He also served on the teams of Generals George B. McClellan and Benjamin Butler.
In April 1862, Strong led a military trip from Ship Island. This trip was against Biloxi, Mississippi. He also led another trip against Ponchatoula. In November 1862, he became a brigadier general. This was a high rank in the army.
Battle of Fort Wagner and Legacy
On July 18, 1863, General Strong led an attack on Fort Wagner. This fort was on Morris Island, South Carolina. During the attack, he was badly hurt. He later died from an infection called tetanus in New York City.
After his death, he was given the rank of major general. This honor was dated from the day of the battle. George Crockett Strong is buried in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York. There is a monument there to remember him.
In 1899, a fort in Boston Harbor was named after him. It is called Fort Strong.
