Girlington is a place in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. It is found west of Bradford city centre. Many people living in Girlington have South Asian backgrounds, especially from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh.

Girlington's Past

Girlington has an interesting history, especially with its old cinemas.

Elite Cinema's Story

The Elite Cinema was built in 1913. It was made of stone and could seat 700 people. In 1924, it closed to become even bigger, holding 1,304 seats. It reopened the next year.

The cinema was used for movies and live shows. During the Second World War, the live shows stopped. Later, in 1968, the cinema closed and became a bingo club.

In 1986, the building was sold to become a mosque. Sadly, a fire damaged it in 1987. The main part of the building was rebuilt in the 1990s, but the original stone front stayed.

Victoria Picture Palace and Morrisons

Another old cinema was the Victoria Picture Palace, built in 1914. It was also made of stone. In 1927, it was updated and renamed the New Victoria. It showed movies with sound from 1929.

After a big fire in 1955, the cinema was fixed up. It closed in 1961. For a short time, it was a bingo hall. Then, Wm. Morrisons Ltd bought it.

In 1961, Morrisons opened its very first supermarket in this converted cinema building. It was called Morrisons Victoria Supermarket. Later, the old cinema building was taken down. A new, modern supermarket now stands nearby.
