Exploring Golden Beach's Location
Golden Beach is a suburb right on the coast. Its eastern side touches the Pumicestone Passage. Most of the area has houses, but they are not built too close together.
A canal from the passage runs through the suburb. This canal connects to other canal developments in the nearby suburb of Pelican Waters.
The Dynamic Sandspit and Waterways
A long, sandy strip of land, called a sandspit, is at the northern tip of Bribie Island. This sandspit helps protect Golden Beach from the big waves of the Coral Sea.
However, this part of the Pumicestone Passage is quite narrow and shallow. The sand and mud banks here are always changing. This means the sandspit's shape can change a lot due to natural processes like sand building up or washing away.
During storms, waves from the Coral Sea can sometimes cross over the sandspit. This could even create new openings into the Pumicestone Passage. If new openings form, Golden Beach and Pelican Waters might face stronger waves directly from the Coral Sea. This would be different from the calmer waters they usually have in the Pumicestone Passage. For example, in December 2020, bad weather started making channels from the ocean right through the northern sandspit.
A Glimpse into Golden Beach's Past
People started settling in Golden Beach in the late 1800s. Back then, the land was mostly used for farming and raising animals.
The suburb really began to develop in the 1950s. It grew very quickly from the 1960s all the way into the 1980s. The name "Golden Beach" was given by the company that developed the area, Caloundra Golden Beach Ltd.
Golden Beach State School first opened its doors on January 24, 1983.
