Churches and History

St Andrew's Church

St Andrew's Church is the local Church of England church. The main part of the church was built in the Victorian era. However, its porch is much older, built in the Tudor style. The church's tall spire reaches almost 300 feet (91 meters) high.

People have worshipped on this site for over 1000 years. In 1086, both the church and Finborough Hall were mentioned in the Domesday Book. This book was a survey of England ordered by William the Conqueror.

There was also a Congregational chapel built in 1862. This building is now a private home.

Family History

Inside St Andrew's Church, there is a special side chapel. It is filled with monuments dedicated to the Wollaston family. This family owned the Finborough Estate for 100 years. The Pettiward family later took over the estate. They owned it until the mid-1930s.

The Pettiward family's connection to the area is so strong that they gave their name to Finborough Road in Earls Court, London. This road was part of the Pettiward Estate and later led to the Finborough Theatre.

The Bogg Race

Since 1897, a special race happens every Easter Monday. Two teams of six men from Haughley and Great Finborough compete. They race one mile across very wet, boggy fields. The race starts at Boyton Hall and finishes at The Chestnut Horse pub in Finborough. It sounds like a muddy but fun tradition!

Great Finborough has been home to several interesting people:
