Great Knoutberry Hill, also called Widdale Fell, is a cool mountain in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. It's located near the village of Dent in England. This mountain sits where three valleys meet: Ribblesdale, Dentdale, and Wensleydale. The border between Cumbria and North Yorkshire actually runs right over the top of it!
Great Knoutberry Hill is about 672 meters (2,205 feet) high. That's like stacking over 1,000 average-sized people on top of each other! It's one of the tallest fells (a local word for hills or mountains) in the Yorkshire Dales. In fact, it's the 16th-highest, sharing the exact same height as another fell called Rogan's Seat.
Exploring Great Knoutberry Hill
Great Knoutberry Hill looks really impressive, especially if you're walking along the Dales Way. The Dales Way is a long-distance walking path that goes through the beautiful Dales. There's a part of this path that's a long road section, stretching from Ribblesdale to Dent Head. From there, you get an amazing view of the hill.
How to Reach the Summit
The best way to climb to the top of Great Knoutberry Hill is from the Dales Way path. You can leave the main path at a place called Stonehouse Farm. From there, you follow the Arten Gill path. This path goes up Dent Fell towards Widdale. Before you reach Widdale, you'll turn off the path to finish your climb to the very top. After enjoying the summit, you can simply return the way you came.
What You Can See from the Top
When you reach the summit of Great Knoutberry Hill, you'll be treated to some fantastic views. You can see the famous Yorkshire Three Peaks all around you. These are three well-known mountains that many hikers try to climb in one day. You can also spot Wild Boar Fell and the beautiful fells of the Lake District to the north. It's a great spot to take in the stunning English countryside!
