Greenwich (/ˈɡrnwɪ/) is a small village in Washington County, New York, United States. It was once known as Whipple City. In 2010, the village had a population of 1,777 people.

The Village of Greenwich is located at the southern edge of the Town of Greenwich. A small part of the village also extends into the Town of Easton. The village grew up on both sides of the Battenkill River. Route NY-29 helps connect the village to other areas.

Village History

This area was settled by people from Europe after the American Revolutionary War. Many moved to New York from New England. The community was first named Whipple City. This name honored Job Whipple, who owned a very successful cotton mill that opened in 1804.

In 1809, the community officially became a village and was named Union Village. Making cotton and textiles was a very important and profitable business here throughout the 1800s. This industry connected the villagers to the larger economy of cotton production. In 1867, the village changed its name to Greenwich.

Greenwich and the Underground Railroad

Greenwich was an important stop on the Underground Railroad. This was a secret network of safe houses and routes. Local people helped enslaved people escape to freedom in upstate New York or Canada. In 2004, a special historical marker was placed in Greenwich. It has a map showing where some of these safe houses were. This marker celebrates Greenwich's role in helping people find freedom.

Famous Visitors

United States President Chester A. Arthur went to a prep school in Greenwich. This was when his father worked as a pastor at the Bottskill Baptist Church in the village.

Historic Places

The Village of Greenwich Historic District is a special area. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1995. This means it has important historical buildings and sites that are protected.

Geography of Greenwich

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village covers about 1.485 square miles (3.85 square kilometers). All of this area is land.

The Batten Kill is a river that flows through the southern part of the town. Historically, this river provided power for mills and factories. Many settlements, including Greenwich village, grew up along its banks because of this power source.

New York Route 29 goes through the village, running from east to west. New York Route 372 also ends in the village, where it meets NY-29.

Population Changes

Greenwich had its largest population in the 1920 census. After that, the number of people living in the village started to go down. This happened because many factories closed, meaning fewer jobs. Also, more people moved to bigger cities for work and other opportunities.
