Club History
How Guarani Started
Guarani Football Club was founded on April 1, 1911. It was started by 12 students from a school in Campinas, São Paulo. These students, including Pompeo de Vito and Vicente Matallo, loved playing football at Praça Carlos Gomes. Vicente Matallo became the club's first president.
The club was named after a famous opera called "Il Guarany". This opera was created by Antônio Carlos Gomes, a well-known composer born in Campinas. Even though the club was founded on April 1st, the founders changed the official date to April 2nd. They did this to avoid jokes from rival teams because April 1st is April Fools' Day.
Key Moments in Guarani's Journey
In 1949, Guarani won the Campeonato Paulista Second Tier. This win allowed them to play in the top state league the next season.
Guarani made history in 1978 by winning the Brazilian Championship. They beat Palmeiras in the final. As of 2023, Guarani is one of only two Brazilian clubs not based in a state capital to have won this national title. The other club is Santos.
In 1979, Guarani reached the semi-finals of the Copa Libertadores. This is a very important international club competition in South America. They were knocked out by Club Olimpia, who went on to win the tournament. This is still Guarani's best performance in an international competition.
In 2016, Guarani did well in the 2016 Campeonato Brasileiro Série C playoffs. They earned a spot back in Serie B after being out of it for four years.
