A Look Back at History
The history of Guinarthe-Parenties goes back a long time. In 1385, a historian named Paul Raymond wrote about the area. He noted that Guinarthe had 13 feux (which meant 13 households or families that paid taxes). Parenties had 9 feux. Both villages were part of the Sauveterre bailiwick, which was an area managed by a local official. Parenties even had an old abbey, which is a type of monastery.
The two villages, Guinarthe and Parenties, officially joined together on June 20, 1842. They then became known as Guinarthe-Parenties on May 16, 1845.
How the Name Changed
The name Guinarthe has changed over the years:
- It was called Guinarte in 1385.
- Around 1540, it was known as Guinarta.
- In 1612, it was called Sanctus Martinus de Guinarte.
- When it first joined Parenties on June 20, 1842, it was called Parenties-Guinarthe.
- Finally, on May 16, 1845, it became Guinarthe-Parenties.
The name Parenties also changed:
- In 1385, it was Paranthies.
- Around 1540, it was Paranthias.
- In 1612, it was called Saint-Pierre de Paranties.
In the local béarnais language, the name is Guinarte-Parentias.
