The Arrondissement of Oloron-Sainte-Marie is a type of administrative area in France. It's located in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department, which is like a large county. Its main town, or capital, is Oloron-Sainte-Marie.

This arrondissement is the largest and most southern one in its department. It covers about 2,885 square kilometers (1,114 square miles). In 2013, about 74,614 people lived there, meaning there were around 25.9 people per square kilometer.

History of Oloron-Sainte-Marie Arrondissement

Arrondissements were first created in France on February 17, 1800. Oloron-Sainte-Marie was one of the original arrondissements in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department.

Later, on September 10, 1926, some parts of other arrondissements, called Mauléon and Orthez, were added to the Oloron-Sainte-Marie arrondissement. This made it even larger.

Geography of the Arrondissement

The Arrondissement of Oloron-Sainte-Marie is located in a very interesting area. To its north and east, it shares borders with the Arrondissement of Pau.

To the southeast, it is next to the Hautes-Pyrénées department. To the south, it borders Spain, and to the west, it is next to the Arrondissement of Bayonne.
