Where is the Gulf of Venice?
The Gulf of Venice is found in the northern part of the Adriatic Sea. Think of the Adriatic Sea as a long, narrow arm of the larger Mediterranean Sea. The Gulf of Venice is right at the very top of this arm.
It stretches from the wide delta of the Po River in northern Italy. A delta is where a river splits into many smaller streams before flowing into the sea. From there, the gulf reaches all the way to the Istria peninsula in Croatia. A peninsula is a piece of land almost surrounded by water.
The western and central parts of the gulf border the Italian regions of Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia. The eastern side of the gulf touches the coasts of Slovenia and Croatia.
Rivers that Flow into the Gulf
Many rivers flow into the Gulf of Venice, bringing fresh water from the land. Along the Italian coast, some of the important rivers are the Isonzo, Piave, Adige, Brenta, and Tagliamento. The Dragonja river flows through the Istria peninsula and also empties into the gulf.
Size and Depth of the Gulf
The Gulf of Venice is quite wide, about 120 kilometers (75 miles) across. Its average depth is around 38 meters (125 feet). In the northeastern corner of the gulf, right in front of the city of Trieste, there is a shallower area known as the Gulf of Trieste.
Main Cities Around the Gulf
Many important cities are located along the shores of the Gulf of Venice. These cities have often been important ports and trading centers for centuries.
