Gununa, sometimes spelled Gunana, is a small town in Queensland, Australia. It is located on Mornington Island, which is part of the Wellesley Islands. This town is within the Shire of Mornington. In 2021, about 1,022 people lived in Gununa.

Where is Gununa?
Gununa is found on the southwest side of Mornington Island. It sits right on the Gulf of Carpentaria, which is a large body of water. The town faces a waterway called the Appel Channel. On the other side of this channel, you can see Denham Island.
A Look at Gununa's History
The town of Gununa was started in 1914. Back then, it was known as Mornington Island Community. The name was officially changed to Gununa on January 16, 1982. The word "Gununa" comes from the Lardil language, which is spoken by the local Indigenous people.
Mornington Island State School first opened its doors on January 28, 1975. The Gununa Post Office also opened sometime before 1982.

In 2016, about 1,136 people lived in Gununa. This was almost everyone living in the entire Mornington Shire. By 2021, the population of Gununa was 1,022 people. This still made up most of the 1,025 people living in the whole shire.
Learning in Gununa
Mornington Island State School is a school run by the government. It teaches both boys and girls from early childhood up to Year 10. The school is located on Lardil Street. In 2018, there were 263 students attending the school. It had 25 teachers and other staff members. The school also offers a special education program for students who need extra support.
There are no schools on the island that teach up to Year 12. This means that students who want to continue their education past Year 10 have two main choices. They can either study through distance education (learning from home) or go to a boarding school somewhere else.
