Hamilton City is located about 9.5 miles (15 km) east of Orland. It is also 10 miles (16 km) west of Chico. The town sits at an elevation of 151 feet (46 m) above sea level. The local phone area code is 530 and the ZIP Code is 95951.

Local Landmarks and Education

Hamilton Union High School is a well-known school in the area. It is famous for its sports teams and its programs about farming. The school has also been recognized as a California Distinguished School.

You can see the large silos of the old Holly Sugar Plant from almost anywhere in town. This plant used to process sugar beets. It was once served by the California Northern Railroad.

"Las Palmas," also called Palm Drive or County Road 16, is a famous road to locals. It is about 2.1 miles (3.4 km) long. This road used to connect Hamilton City to the Mills Orchards. These orchards were originally owned by James Mills, Sr. and his family.

How Hamilton City Started

The town of Hamilton City began in 1905. It started because a large sugar beet processing plant was built there. James Hamilton and the Alta California Sugar Beet Company founded the plant. It was finished in 1906. The company later changed its name to Sacramento Valley Sugar Company in 1908.

The Sugar Plant's Journey

The sugar plant later became part of the Holly Sugar Corporation. Even today, many people still call it the Holly Sugar Plant. Holly Sugar was sold to Spreckels Sugar Company in 1936. Later, Spreckels was bought by Imperial Sugar.

The sugar plant closed down in 2006. However, in 2021, a company called Nutrien bought and updated it. Nutrien is a company that makes fertilizer.

Early Community Development

The first post office in Hamilton City opened in 1906. As more people moved to the town, the local cemetery had to be moved. It was relocated to a new spot about 10 miles north of Artois, California, to make room for new buildings.

Ray Odom was the first Superintendent of the new Hamilton Unified School District. He used to be the Principal and Superintendent of Hamilton Union High School. Mr. Odom retired in 2011.

Currently, Jeremy Powell is the Superintendent. Cris Oseguera is the current High School Principal. The Hamilton Unified School District includes several schools:
