Hellendoorn is a municipality and town located in the middle of the Netherlands. It is part of the province of Overijssel. As of 2019, about 35,808 people lived in the Hellendoorn municipality.
Near the town of Hellendoorn, you can find a fun amusement park called Avonturenpark Hellendoorn . Also, on the edge of town, there is a large ice cream factory. This factory, owned by Unilever, makes Ben & Jerry's ice cream for people all over Europe!

Hellendoorn's Natural Beauty
The middle part of Hellendoorn municipality has many hills and is not very crowded. This area stretches south into another municipality called Rijssen-Holten. It is known as the Sallandse Heuvelrug, which means "Salland Ridge."
The highest point in this area is about 70 meters (230 feet) above sea level. This high point is part of the Noetselerberg hill. A large part of this area is covered by thick forests. You can also find open heathlands here. This amazing natural scenery is now part of the Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park. It's a great place for hiking and enjoying nature!
Hellendoorn was originally part of a region called Salland. However, it is now considered part of Twente for administrative reasons.
Hellendoorn's Past
Hellendoorn has some interesting history! It is the only place in the Netherlands where people used to mine for gold.
During World War II, German forces used a special launching platform near Hellendoorn. From here, they fired V-2 rockets towards the city of Antwerp.
On March 22, 1945, the town of Nijverdal, which is part of Hellendoorn, was heavily bombed. Allied planes were trying to target a German leader named Arthur Seyss-Inquart. He had set up his temporary office in a school in Nijverdal. However, he had already left town when the bombing happened. Sadly, over 70 people were killed, mostly on Grotestraat street.
A small part of the famous movie A Bridge Too Far was filmed near Hellendoorn. This movie is about a big battle during World War II.
In 1955, Hellendoorn grew bigger when it took over a small part of the nearby municipality of Wierden. This area included places like Eversberg and Lochter. In the late 1970s, a new neighborhood called 'het Lochter' was built there.
Famous People from Hellendoorn
Many talented people have come from Hellendoorn and its surrounding towns:
- Ernst Bakker (1946–2014) was a Dutch politician.
- Douwe Draaisma (born 1953 in Nijverdal) is a Dutch psychologist and a university professor.
- Herman Ponsteen (born 1953 in Hellendoorn) is a Dutch track cyclist. He won a silver medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics.
- Derk van Egmond (born 1956 in Hellendoorn) is also a Dutch track cyclist. He competed in the 1984 Summer Olympics.
- Wim Woudsma (1957 in Nijverdal – 2019) was a Dutch football player who played in many club games.
