The Story of Herr's Snacks
How Herr's Began
The Herr's company started way back in 1946. A young man named Jim Herr, who was 21 years old, bought a small potato chip company. This was in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. At first, the company only sold about thirty dollars worth of chips each week. That's like selling about $470 worth of chips today, if you think about how prices have changed!
Growing and Changing Over Time
In 1958, Herr's started making potato chips with different flavors. This was a big step! Later, in 1974, they changed how they packaged their chips. They stopped using old-fashioned paper bags and started using shiny foil bags instead.
During the 1970s and 1980s, more and more people wanted snack foods. This helped Herr's grow a lot! They started making many new kinds of snacks. These included corn chips, tortilla chips, and pretzels.
Family Leadership at Herr's
In the 1990s, Jim Herr began to let his sons, Ed Herr and J. M. Herr, take over the company. Ed became the main person who spoke for the company. Jim Herr retired as the company's chairman in January 2005. His son, J. M. Herr, took over that role. Jim Herr stayed on the company's board of directors until he passed away on April 5, 2012, at 87 years old. Today, Ed Herr is the president and CEO, and J. M. Herr is the executive chairman.

Special Partnerships and New Flavors
In January 2016, Herr's shared a picture online of a new chip flavor. It was Crab Fries flavored potato chips! They worked with Chickie's & Pete's, a sports bar in the Philadelphia area, to create these. People were so excited that Herr's released the chips even sooner than planned, in February! They also teamed up with Stubbs BBQ sauce to make a special BBQ chips line.
Herr's potato chips are easy to spot because they come in their special shiny foil bags.
